| Hello, I happened upon this site while doing research on Ovation. I had a Balladeer decades ago that I loved! The transition between my Les Paul and Balladeer was about as seamless as anyone could expect. My Balladeer had a crack from the bridge to the tail piece that didn't hinder the sound or performance. I took a classical guitar course in college and the instructor asked me if I was using my guitar for a cricket bat! I'm wanting to get another Ovation and am noticing the cracking was not unique to my guitar. In fact, I'm finding more Ovations with cracks than without! What's up with that? I know this may be a tough question but is there an Ovation "Buyer's Guide"? I have a lead on a 1975, 1612-1, one crack, one owner from an estate sale in the $350 range. That seems to be in the ball park. I realize that guitars are like shoes, when you find a good fit, buy it. However, is there something other than the obvious that I should be aware of? I looking for the easiest to play with good sound. Thanks in advance! |

It is good that you are seeing in in person.
Look at String Height at the 12th Fret. You can adjust the string height at the Saddle, but...
If it needs a neck reset, that is difficult or impossible with a glued-on neck.
In the ole daze, you could send it to the Factory and get a new body attached...
But those days are over.
Otherwise, you look at Fret Wear and look for fingernail divots in the fingerboard.
You would want to check the electronics.
Bring a little amp if you have one and don't think that they do.
Otherwise, you just play it and see what you think.
Eventually a "moderator" will be along to upgrade you... But this is a Holiday Weekend.

I would also think you could find yourself a crackless Ovation for that $350 with a bit of patience. |
