Is it OK to store guitars (ovations and others) in some sort of cupboard/cabinet? Need to rationalise storage in a room currently piled high with junk (and also guitars).

The more constant the the conditions the better it will be for the guitars. Closets or cabinets along walls which are interior (shared with other rooms in the house) will be more stable in temperature. Wall hangers are a good way to have guitars easily available but off of the floor and out of the way.

Our climate is fairly uniform (mean daily max 12.9C, min 6.9 C, humidity 76.8 to 86.7) and the guitars will be in the same room as they are now. I was wondering if enclosing them might trap too much humidity but it need not be airtight. Good point about internal walls though. I will raise these points with the Design Authority (the room is not exclusively mine...)

Are you going to store them OUTSIDE?

If not, outside's climate is neglectable. Inside is what counts. If you're not a fan of open windows.

About the only thing you might want to do is put in a dehumidifier. But before doing that I would track the humidity in the room for a while to see how stable it is. With heating, the inside humidity will be lower than outside, and it might be ok. 30% to 60% is a pretty safe humidity for the long term. Stability is more important than the absolute humidity as long as you are within a safe range.

Inside a closet might be more stable and thus might be even better than out in the room.
