Location: Munich, Germany | Just curious, did Ovation use Abalone shell pieces all of the time or did they switch to Abalam (ABAlone LAMinate) someday? Different to any other maker you still see single pieces of shell even in the newest/latest bindings, but that alone wouldn't be a sign for not being Abalam, since you could cut this as well. Does anybody know, if they did use Abalam? Or did they use real pieces all of the time? Martin, for example, switched to Abalam a long time ago, and I have to admit, it does look good without those cutting signs. But all of my Ovations do have cutting signs, so... Wouldn't be the first time that Kaman did "better" than other makers. Best regards, Kurt

Location: Jet City | I was told there was a person at the factory who's sole job was to fit those tiny pieces in. I think I've even seen video.
I have no idea if it was pieces of a laminate, but that doesn't make sense if it were. Why put that sort of intensive labor in and then save on bogus shell pieces?
Just my $.02 I really have no clue |

Location: Tennessee | I couldn't tell you if they ever used laminate. What I do know is that is the several times that I saw them putting abalone in at the factory, it was always real abalone pieces. I recall Rick Hall talking one time about how they only use real abalone because of the way the stage lights hit the abalone and gave it that special look, and that was very important to Ovation because of their performance lagacy. So I think until at least 2006, they used real abalone. But I couldn't tell you if it changed after that.

Location: Munich, Germany | Thanks Bobbo,
that is all I wanted to know! My newest Abalone-Ovation is from 2005, so...
I was quite sure that Ovation used real shell pieces all the (Kaman) time, which makes them even more "underestimated". Not to say that Abalam was a bad product, in no way it is and offers so much more, new possibilities for inlay artists, but it's nice to know that my Ovations do have the real McCoy.
Best regards,
