Joined: January 2008 Posts: 5 Location: Long Island | Hello all, Great forum you have here :) I am the proud owner of 2 Ovation guitars and an Ovation Uke. I am ready for a possible dream Ovation or Adamas. The Adamas 1680 and the Elite 1718 are somewhat closest to what I would consider.Deep bowl and 1-3/4 nut width are not exactly ultimate but I've owned both before. Also Musicians Friend has a picture of an Adamas 1581-5 with a picture that looks real close but the specs on their page and on the Adamas site don't match the 12 Fret non cutaway that is pictured on MF's page? What I really want is a 12 fret, slothead, non cutaway Elite or Adamas with either a mid-depth bowl or a contour bowl and 1-11/16 nut width. Is there a model that fits the above or close? Does anybody have an approximate idea of what a Custom Shop Adamas or Elite model would cost? Any help/advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't a clue myself, being an electric player, but plenty of folks here do. You'll likely get more info than you want. Be prepared, my friend! Keep your wits about!

If you spend some time on this board and exercise patience, There is no doubt in my mind that you will end up with the exact guitar you want. There are a lot of people on this board with a lot of knowledge (I'm not considering myself in that group), and you would be suprised to find that some are even previous Kaman employees. TO sum it up ... Lots of good scoop! Beware though ... it can become addicting and you may end up with more instruments than you ever planned on.(If you're married, you may want to start preparing your spouse)

A few W681TA are 12 fret widenecks like the U681. Others are 14 fret std neck export models similar to 1681 Adamas II. Confusing, I know. Dave

Joined: January 2008 Posts: 5 Location: Long Island | Wow, Thank you all for replying and the warm welcome. Nut width is not deal breaker, my 97 Ovation is normal nut width and my favorite guitar. I also have a Larrivee with 1-3/4 nut that I play regurarly also. But my 97 Ovation is the sweetest and most comfortable neck ever to me. Does anybody else switch between nut widths regurarly? Also to be clear, A or A/E isn't an issue really. I would take either. The 1680 and U681T are almost perfect but I really do prefer a slightly shallower or contoured bowl. I've put together enough for the 1680 standard model and am very curious what upcharges would run for custom orders. Thanks again to all who've posted...I hope to hear more feedback.

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 12755 Location: Boise, Idaho | I switch nutwidths regularly and it causes some difficulty, but I miss frets all the time when I'm playing the same guitar over and over, so I can't really blame it on the change in widths. It seems easier for some reason when I switch from wider to narrow, rather than the other way around. As far as getting a custom guitar, get in touch with Al when he gets back from NAMM. He's done as much as anyone and knows who to deal with and how to get the job done. The Adamas Custom Shop was sort of advertised for about one year. As of January 1, Al might be the only one who knows or can find out how to get a custom order done.

I have a Koa Ovation Uke I'm going to posta pics of in another thread. I don't know how the special orders work. But a mid depth, 12 fret, slothead non-cutaway Elite would be really cool also I think. I also really dig the look of the walnut epaulets on the 1680.

Sometimes my OCD kicks in when it come to guitars ;-) I've got about 3g to spend. I have a feeling a custom order Adamas may go well over that. Maybe a custom order Elite for around that? Or I may just go with either the standard 1680 or the Koa if Al has one left. Either way I think I'll end up with a very sweet guitar that I can have for life :)
