Location: Italy | Recently I've bought a Pacemaker mod. 1615 from 1981. My luthier having some trouble to correctly setup the neck because the tension rod nut is ruined, in other words the surface is no hexagonal but quite circular And he can not spin it. I should find a new tension rod nut to replace the original. In Italy is very hard to find it, anyone of you (lucky guys who lived in your wonderful country) can help me?

Yes, you need a new brass adjustment nut. Being a 1981 your guitar has the Kbar style neck with the adjustment nut inside the bowl. The nut is (approx) 2" long, 1/2" dia, and is tapped for 10/32 thread on one end and broached 3/16" hex on the other.
Owing to the fact the adjustment nut is brass, stripping them out is an all too common issue. The designers felt this was an important feature in that stripping out the nut is vastly preferrable to stripping the thread on the tension rod. The nut is (was) easily replaced; a stripped tension rod is worst case scenario. However now that Ovation is gone....
These aren't made anymore. We supplied hundreds of thousands of them to Ovation but discontinued production when the new LX necks came along.
It's possible, if the Ovation/Takamine Service Center really does happen, that they may have some in stock but who knows?
Your other option would be to rework your existing adjustment nut. A machinist friend may be able to help. Good luck.

My luthier (who worked for many years in Cremona with the best master luthiers making violins, guitars and so on) says it's not a problem to unscrew the nut, but the problem is to find a new rod nut compatible. The truss rod rescue kit is not a solution for my problem. I have a friend here who just sent John his guitar and has been in contact with him over the past few days. John will know whether that nut is still available. |

Just kidding. Strange, general public thinks they can't get parts for an Alfa, not true. Never had a problem getting parts for my Veloce Spyder. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | What I think that he really needs is the NUT for the end of the Truss Rod.
As I remember from my Pacemaker, the nut is longer (wider?) than a normal nut.
But I am thinking that a regular nut would work, provided that you had a Deep-Well socket to tighten it.
Also, a stack of washers might help like previously mentioned.

I have a friend who has used his Adamas for 30 years until the bridge wore out from string changes. (He shoulda used string tubes!) At my urging, he sent it in to John last week. I can't wait to see and hear it when it comes back. |
