Location: Milano, ITALY | Before year 2k it was easy: the first digit was "1". Then it became a mess. I am trying to write a reference file of the model numbers and I am working on the first digit. Any suggestions/help for completing the task?
1 - most models born before year 2000
2 - ?
5 - ?
6 - ?
C - ?
D - ?
N - Nakao
NV - Nakao 100 year old spruce 681 limited
MC - mandocello
MM - mandolin
Q - prototype 597 full carbon
R - Roland equipped
S - second and/or special?
U - ?
W - ?
Other characters apparently are used for Far East made instruments. |

Location: Utah | GC was a prefix used for some Guitar Center spec versions. These guitars were nearly identical to regular models. There were a number of 1778-T based models and a 1778LX based model that I am aware of, but I can't remember exactly how they were designated. GC778-T and GC778LX perhaps? |

Location: Utah | Now that I've had a cup of coffee, the correct numbers are GCXT-RF for the red flame T, and GC178LX for the 1778LX. These guitars were only very slightly different from the parent models. |

6 - STD ELITE, WIDENECKS, A FEW ADAMAS
I have 6751 and 6756 which are Balladeer and Legend 12 strings, and I don't think they classify as wide neck. I think the equivalent elite was 6758. I think some of the 6s are intermediate between 1s and 2s e.g.
Balladeer 1151->1751->6751->2751
Legend 1156->1756->6756->2056
Elite 1158->1758->6758->2758/2058
and would be in the late 90s early 2000s with bowl evolution from regular bowl to cutaway bowl to contour bowl with cutaway. This was then further modified with lx and ax suffixes. So rather than just looking at first digit it may also make sense to track the (d)evolution of some of the core models through the numbering system using all digits. |
