First, write out the rhythym in tab for the whole song. Learn the the rhythym and strums for the entire song. Most songs are under 24 bars.

Second, put in the chord changes. Note them above the tab lines. Learn it so it's second nature.

Third, but in the words and melody. Write them under the rythym you've tabbed for the entire song.

Practice.

A lot of latin music has words and melody, that to us, don't fall in the right place. Compare La Bamba with Twist and Shout. While La Bamba is easy, you'll note that in terms of chords and rhythym they are the same, but the words and melody are different, they fall in places that we gringos wouldn't use.

What I would suggest is you learn a medly of La Bamba and Twist and Shout, and then a tune using a Bo Diddley rythym, like Not Fade Away, Stones Version. Once, you get those, then the rest will be opened up to you.

Now you know why I mostly do instrumentals....

OMA, Cliff had a good point about Cooper not playing anything while he's singing (wait... Alice Cooper...singing...something not right there...). Some songs just aren't meant to be sung (or spoken) and played by the same person.

I have a real hard time with many Bruce Cockburn songs. Seems like so many of them, the melody is either a counterpoint to the guitar part, or a completely different cadence.

Try some Ozzy Osborne.
One measure someone else banging on power chord.
One measure mumbling incoherently into microphone.
Repeat ad nauseum.

sing along with your scales as you play them. then move onto simple songs and sing the notes as you play them. play chords and just hum the melody, eventually moving onto the words. remember george benson?, he sang with his notes. its easy, pretty soon youll be walking and chewing gum at the same time as well. (ha ha).
