Hi everyone,

I have just a question about the OP-Pro Studio. Is the XLR Preamp different? Or is it just a connection issue. Does the "normal" OP-Pro Studio provide XLR connectivity without using that - and can I upgrade this?

Cheers
Dieter

Same electronics inside the preamp. The can in the guitar has a different circuit board to feed the XLR output. Instead of a single 1/4" output jack on the guitar, there is a little circuit board with both the 1/4" and XLR jacks. There is a different cable from the can to the outputs.

You can upgrade the can and jacks by just installing those parts.

I think the can is also the same . I've upgraded about ten guitars to the OP-Pro-series preamps and all cans had the connection for the XLR-unit. But there were two different XLR-units, one for the OP-Pro with phantom-power and the one for OP-Pro-Studio and VIP-5 without phantom-power. The only can (with 8 connectors inside) I know without the XLR port is from the iDea-preamp. It has a little jack for the AUX input. But the iDea works fine in all cans using the 1/4" jack for output and all preamps are working in the Idea-can, except of the OP-Pro. I don't know why, but mine does not work in the Idea-can.

Oh yes, this was the thing I forgot to ask - the phantom power!!! This is the essential issue I need. So if I have the OP-Pro Studio (in a 2077LX) and I want to use an XLR with phantom power - what to do (if possible)?

Phantom power goes in via the XLR jack. So you need an external preamp or mixer which supports phantom power and the XLR. Just turn on the phantom power and you should be good to go. You may need to plug something into the 1/4" output jack as well. Any old mono 1/4" plug will do, it doesn't even need to be connected to a cable.

I can't remember if the 1/4" plug is required for the Studio, it is required for the VIP unless you have an XLR cable with the correct pin soldered to the body of the plug. Al sells the correct XLR cable for this.

FlySig is right, but the only preamps I know you can use phantom power with (working without the battery) are OP-Pro, OP-50, Optimax and Optima. All others will work with a XLR cable if supported, but it will not feed the preamp.

...... I found this old thread. Pez, can you explain better? If the electronics of the preamps are the same , the can has the PCB XRL ( see photo), and the bowl has the XRL outpout , why not phantom power ?

It runs off 9 volt batter only. Its a balanced line XLR, not a PCB XLR.... this is what it looks like http://s219.photobucket.com/user/pezcleo/media/55.jpg.html?sort=3&o...

Matt Smith says in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxSmU5e_VeI that OP-Pro Studio in a 2077LX IS phantom powered (its at the 3:27 mark), but then again he isn't using the XLR jack at all in demonstation video. So he is wrong then?

Yes, he is wrong! I've upgraded nearly all my "old" guitars (1614, 1615, 1624 and the 1627 I sold) to OP-Pro-Series preamps, all with XLR Units with Phantom.power, but only the Preamps I listed before are able to work with it.
