.... you might be starting to make some progress, you find you're still walking in some tall corn.

This is how Linda Ronstadt approched a song (from a Yahoo interview)

.

YAHOO: So did you enjoy singing rock 'n' roll songs like "Back in the U.S.A.,"?

RONSTADT: I enjoyed singing it. When somebody as masterful as Chuck Berry writes a song, it's always fun to climb into the rigging or get a tour of the architecture of how the song's constructed. That's an interesting song, because it builds on a couple of different kinds of shuffles that roll and change as the song progresses. And his songs are based on a piano shuffle, not a guitar figure. So once I figured that out, it was easier to figure out the phrasing. And while I was singing it, I was walking around in that construction going, "Oh, look at this," and "Oh, look at that!"

Yeah right. She sang it just like Chuck Berry did. She makes it sound like she deconstructed it and rebuilt it.

Yeah, just like she de- and re-constructed Warren Zevon's "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me".

love her interpretation of songs.
Linda was a great vehicle for songwriters that may have never got the recognition.

yup it was sorta brill buildingesque but still with her voice, and talent it worked well.

and killer backing band.

plus she was super hot.

Always loved Linda's work and her re-intrepretation of others music. Far too few people have that kind of talent.

Anybody remember her in Pirates of Penzance opposite Kevin Klein? It was difficult not to fall in love with those huge eyes.

I only saw her in concert once and was too far away to really see her. The space between us also filled quickly with that smoke that smelled funny. When she wore her cub scout uniform, I couldn't hear anything over all the guys' catcalls.

Linda was one of only two people who could really do justice to Jimmy Webb's tunes.....

But I do credit Al for knowing of the Brill Building and the important history/music which was made there.

she always had the mother of all back up bands behind her. I love her doing Karla Bonoff tunes.

BobG, I have to agree. I'm a huge Bonoff fan and prefer to hear over other artist doing her songs.
