Hello & hope you're all going well!

My name is Bruce and I'm from Adelaide, South Australia & I am a new Ovation electric guitar owner.
Yamaha SGs are my "thing" but I have always been intrigued by the Breadwinner / Deacon shape & design.

I recently rescued a brown Deacon electric and have been in the process of cleaning it up & getting my guitar tech friend to set it up. During this process it became apparent that the neck was bowed - not a huge amount but just enough to make the action higher than I'd normally have it for normal playing (but much lower than I'd set-up a guitar for slide).

As this is THE place for Ovation-related matters I would be very grateful for any and all information about fixing this problem (if that's even possible).

Cheers / Thanks & keep up the good work!
Bruce

An Aussie called Bruce. How Monty Pythonesque! Welcome mate!

It IS possible to buy necks. Some members (Woody, Miles) may have something floating around their man caves.

Welcome Bruce!

When they let you in to post add some pictures of your Deacon and we'll see if we have any replacement necks.
Also note that since the neck can be unbolted it could also be placed in a jig to try to straighten it out or get re-fretted to straighten it. You have some good resources in the Oz group.

It might be easier to just buy one of AJ's - he has too many guitars!

Jim does't think so.

I reckon he'll bring at least 3 more home from his US trip!

Hi Guys

Thanks so much for the information & warm welcome!

I'm at that 50-50 point - some of my axe-wielding friends are of the opinion that the action's actually not too bad to play as is. Given that two of my Yamaha SF 500s have slight curvature to accommodate the 24 fret neck, maybe it's not serious enough for a replacement... Maybe.

The clincher is that I don't know anybody locally who owns a Breadwinner or Deacon to make a neck action comparison. However, I will definitely talk to my guy about removing the neck & trying to re-straighten in a jig - so thanks for that advice, Woody!

If anybody (Woody, Miles) can give me a ballpark figure for a replacement Deacon neck it would be my next step.

Will get some pictures taken shortly...
Cheers,
??? Bruce
