There is on Adamas on Gumtree in Canberra, Australia.

I asked the guy for some details he said its an 1581-5 6102. Maybe the '6102' is the serial number?

He said "it's in excellent condition and was made in 98/99"

The model reference says 1984-1997. If the serial number is 6102, that places it in 1991.
And there are no photos.

I'm sort of interested, but not at $3,500.

But before I can make an offer I need to know from the brains trust is the 1581 a good model?

Thoughts people?

1581s are good. Deep bowl textured top cutaway Adamas. The only improvement would be a hand laid bowl. $3,500 is too high - you could get one in the US, pay for postage, and still be well in front.

A good guitar but you can get one for a lower price.

Thanks very much guys.

I'll go and have a look at it. Its only 15 minutes from where I live.

If I make an offer, which is likely to be half what he's asking. I'll see what he's like though, before I make the offer.

I may just walk a way and leave him with it.

Thanks again for your advice.

I get my Adamas model numbers mixed up, but didn't Al have 1581 reissues with the deep bowl for sale recently for about half what that guy wants? Seems like you could get one from Al, pay shipping, and still be way ahead.

The 1581 is arguably the best Adamas there is if you're looking for no broccoli, cutaway, and a standard nut.

That's a pretty high price though. Not sure what the ship cost is, but as Mark mentioned with Al's you'd have a new guitar under warranty. That's gotta beat out $3500 for a local used one.

That's where I bought mine.

Thanks guys.

I'll check it out tomorrow after work and see what its like. But I won't be offering anything near what he's asking.

If I was to pay the amount he's asking I would go for a new one and get it from Al.

I really appreciate the help I get here on OFC. It is amazing!

I'll keep you posted on developments.

And you'll get the lifetime warranty if you buy a new one from Al.  $3500 is even too much, even if it was some rare color.

Best of luck!

I had a look at the 1581. The serial number is 6102, which places it in 1991. The owner said it was made in 1998 and said that maybe it was new old stock.

It looks very much like the guitar in this picture, except it has an Op-24 preamp.

It has fret wear in the usual places, but doesn't need any work yet. There are a few dings on the headstock, but it is in fairly good condition. The case has seen better days.

I offered him $2k, and wished him good luck. I'll keep looking for something more reasonably priced.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.

Wow. I paid $750 for mine about 7 years ago... looks like things have gone up.
