well - reason I ask is I have seen one with what appears like a rosewood board on it. It's got the classic two piece maple neck, but a rosewood board. So, I just wanted to confirm that they were actually made at one time with rosewood boards. Looks like RW to me......

Looks Like Rosewood to me also. Did you get it new? I may be a new neck (if you got it used). That don't look like an ebony bridge either.

I sure hope that isn't what happens if someone were to put lemon oil on it. oops

it isn't mine - it's at auction

Wonder if it's had a neck replacement. And then why? I was thinking Ovation may have made a few early ones with RW boards..

Actually the bridge might be ebony - but it kind of looks like walnut stained dark doesn't it...

:-)

I'm looking at mine (but it is new) and I cannot see any grain in my bridge, under the finish. Not unless I pick it up and look.
But maybe it is the Flash camera.

[if mine does do that, I will stain it]

I wonder if it is just that it appears lighter due to the Flash..... I was looking at the photos of a 1778T over at Elderly (since they often do a lot of nice and detailed photos of their in stock guitars):

This is definitely a model with an ebony fretboard, but it also does appear to be "lighter" and almost like rosewood.

Zadillo - think you have a point there. The elderly instrument's neck and bridge does look lighter. Must be african ebony, almost striped..

As you may know, GV, it's very hard these days to find a piece of naturally dark colored chocolate ebony without dying. This is probably undied ebony. Frankly, I like it better.

And as far as I know, they were always ebony boards.

an4340 I agree with you. I had a koa bodied Larrivee with ebony board and it had minute lighter parts in it. It was overall darker than the one in the picture I posted. Also had a Carvin bolt that had a similar African ebony board. IMO they are very beautiful and can very much resemble rosewood in coloration. Here's a link that explains current ebony sources.. take a look at the African ebony..
