Does anyone have an opinion on strings getting stale in the package? Like if you were to buy a years worth of strings to save some money, do they "get old" in the package? I know some string suppliers claim their strings are always fresh.

The women part was just to get people to look at another question about strings.

I play Elixir nanoweb lights and I've not had a problem with string that I bought 6-8 month ago.
I also bought 5 sets on Elixir polywebs for a 12 string about 3-1/2 years ago for $5/set. Riccardo's music had just been bought out by Music and Arts Ctr.and they for some reason trying to get rid of them??? Just changed strings about 7 weeks ago and they still sound great!

The question is if strings get stale in the package.
Unless they are subjected to moisture, I don't think so. We might be suprised by how long our "new' set of strings have been sitting around. Between manufacturers production runs, warehouses and non-rotation of inventory that new set on strings may be a year old... or even older.

I remember seeing Kim K. at one of the jams with a carrying cse of diferent sizes of strings and there seemed to be a lot in each box. I wonder if it's worth buying like that.

I buy in bulk (usually 10set/box), cheaper that way, and never had a problem.

Depends on how often you change strings. It's not worth it to me, to get more than a year's worth, if I'm buying for myself.

I've been stringing the same woman along for over 30 years last Thursday! Still works fine.

That brings up several questions tho', fill. Is it still fresh? Is she still as "bright and warm" as she was? And, if so, what kind of box do you keep her in?

(Lord have mercy on my soul if SWMBO is looking over my shoulder...)

Just like you and yours, we are as deeply in love as we ever were. From a much more mature perspective.

We can now differenciate between passion (which is self-absorbed...not love) and enduring love.

(hope that helps if she's watching!);-)

Strings will last a long time, several years. Just keep them dry, humidity will make them tarnish and get rust spots. They are shot then.

I sold several sets of Sound City Rotosound bass strings that I never used back from the '70s and it was like a feeding frenzy on ebay (which made me assume that they don't go bad).

I vividly recall once telling a girl "Let's just be friends, no strings attached." We just celebrated our 20th this year.

D'Addario claim to use a corrosion resistant bag in their string packaging.

I've got a set of D'Add Bass strings which are about 15 years old, the bag is slightly open, and the strings still LOOK brand new. Seems to me the D'Add bags have some merit?

(Yeah, I haven't re-strung my bass in a LONG time!!)

Last time strung the 1118, broke the 9 and found one in the piano bench that was at least 15 yrs old. Works fine. I guess stretch and vibration is what deadens them.
