Hi Friends- I've had my eye on a preacher deluxe in pretty good- though clearly well- used condition that I'm thinking of buying. Everything works, it plays well, the case is original, and so on.
What would you say it is worth? What should I offer?
Thankyou for any guidance in this regard, and best wishes.

$700ish, maybe a bit more. Depends on what exactly "pretty good though clearly well-used condition" means.

make sure it has the original pickups and electronics.. and all phase and pickup switches are working properly... check the battery compartment on the back under the plate for corrosion as well..

the tone circuit on these are hard to repair if the oem electronics are dicey..

Welcome sheshe

There is one on ebay now
Something a bit odd about it though, it should have gold hardware.

Preacher Deluxe Ebay
Is that the one you are looking at?

FlySig is around the money.

I paid $600 for mine about 9 months ago, Black Gold hardware and mint except for a little pitting on the pickguard.

If it's a private sale maybe offer a bit less.
Cheers AJ :)

Yeah, that one on eBay looks different. The auction says "prototype", so if it came from the factory like that, ok. But... if not, it's not worth anywhere near $700.

My daughter's Preacher Deluxe is a lot different. Gold hardware as mentioned by AJ. Also, active electronics, and a switch above each pickup to select humbucker or single coil.

What it looks like is that the electronics have been pulled out and it is a passive Preacher. The bridge is different, too. Maybe it really is an original configuration prototype.

The lack of a case is a $ hit also.

For a price comparison, I paid $700 for my daughter's Preacher Deluxe, and it was, IMO, a good deal compared to other recent similar sold items around the www. Her guitar is in excellent near-mint condition, all original except missing one original strap button. Original case in excellent condition minus some aging of materials.

I think the preacher on ebay has the little "C" in the logo for custom.

Could be worth it for the one of a kind??

I'm not yet convinced that this guitar is in factory as-shipped configuration. It may well be that it was a prototype, but the missing electronics worry me. It looks like original pickups, and the original pickguard switch setup minus the coil tap switches on the Deluxe. So why no active electronics? It even has the battery compartment cover. Would a passive prototype have had the cover for no good reason?

Also, there is a wide strip of clear tape holding the battery cover on. Why? And will taking the tape off damage the finish?

I think, if I were in the market, I would maybe offer $500 since there are no active electronics and no original case. For a few hundred dollars you could buy those items and bring it back to original configuration, and then it would be worth the asking price.

Maybe Beal will remember this prototype and know if it should have the active electronics still.

BTW, the bridge looks like a nice improvement mechanically, in terms of intonation adjustment and string replacement.

FS, I'm not convinced either, it certainly is a bit odd.
Beal did mention in another thread that they did build a few Breadwinners for the Partridge Family that only had passive electronics.
Could be something similar here I guess.
It is however a good looking guitar.
Beal, Miles??

Well the switches and the battery compartment are flags for me. No pickup selector?? I don't think so. The switched also look like generic mini's, not what Ovation used at the time.

If they wanted to make a "passive" Preacher/Preacher deluxe at the factory... why wouldn't they just take a preacher, route it like a viper for the single vol, tone, switch and jack. and put a bound neck on it.

Maybe Mauvis B has a comment on this, but I can't see them wasting a battery plate for nothing, and using generic switches, but I guess anything is possible.

Thanks for all the replies. The one I'm after is not the one currently on E-Bay. It's areal deluxe, and is all intact and original.
