Not too expensive and Manhattan does not compute!

Having an acceptable price point might help and what section of the city you wish to stay.

Just a suggestion from someone who has traveled a LOT. Consider NOT staying in the heart of things, but close enough to get to easily. How much time are you actually going to spend AT the hotel? At least when we travel, the hotel is for sleeping. It just needs to be safe, comfy and easy to get to other stuff. A LOT of people commute to NY from Jersey where you can get a nice place with a nice view for under $150 a night. Most of Manhattan seems to be around $300 / night. This link also has a ton of good info in response to different traveler. A bit to think about anyway.

I agree with Miles. We visited NYC earlier this year and stayed in Jersey City/Paulus Hook area. A quick ride on PATH (subway) deposited us right into Manhattan in the WTC area or up in midtown. Plus you get those great shots of the city from across the Hudson. We stayed with family so I don't have any specific hotel recommendations.
