Good News! ...I just got my baritone. Now I just need to know what notes to tune it to and what kind of strings to use. Anyone know a good string source and the answer to the first question?

It's "designed t'be tuned down to "D", but you you can tune it down to what you want . . .

. . I've tuned it down to as low as B.

I've been using D'Add EJ18's (Heavy) on it.
(get yer fingers "ready" for 'em, tho . . )

Typically "D" and EJ18's.

To me, the EJ18's feel pretty much like "mediums" on a standard tuned guitar.

Either Cliff normally plays with lites on his standard guitars or he is a wussy.

Cliff is very manly in his string choice.

I just use the normal lite or medium and tune it to D. You can play all the same stuff with a different flavor. Going real low is nice but it's often a whole new instrument and you got to work it all out, and I'm lazy.

Heavy's on the LongNeck.

Light's on the SlotHead.

Medium's on everything else.

Y'don't really "notice" the differnce in Heavy's, until y'go back to a guitar with Mediums on it.

Bill, what did the factory string our 2080D's with?

They feel really good and hold the tuning extremely well.

www.juststrings.com has a complete selection of baritone strings if you want to try some out. They are a must if you want to tune down to B or C.

That said, what Beal and Cliff said is the easy way to get bang out of the longneck right away.

the regular lite guage, 12-52. That's pretty much what I've stayed with. I like going to open D and for that the A,D,G strings go up. The other thing about mine is the fingerboard is flat. Makes slide real easy. That's the second reason I got rid of the one Cliff has. The first is 1&11/16. The third reason is that Cliff really needed it, it looks good on him.

As as side note my baritone National came with something like 16-65 on it. I recently put on 14-58 and tune it to D rather than C or B and it's much more fun to play. It's a 26" scale, not as long as the Ovation.

A further note. I had put the blue peacock strings on the 2080D a few weeks ago. It looked kinda nice. I just pulled it out to work on the wind song and I have to say, those strings suck on grafite tops. They are still new strings but all the high end was gone. I put on a set of 16EXP and every thing is back to normal.

I had to order baritone strings since nobody carried them. I went to GC in Grand Rapids (1.5 hr drive, but I was going to the airport there anyway) after seeing on the internet that they supposedly carried them. They didn't.

I decided to do a little experiment and order from two local shops which were accross the street from each other. I also ordered a set on ebay. One guy charged me $26.50(a supposed markdown from 29.95. The guy accross the street was $16.50. The internet (Ebay) price was $10.99. Quite a difference huh?

Anyway ... I received a set today and I'm running home to put them on.
