Larry and I played a little mini-show at my son's middle school this morning. Here's one video of me taking a lead...

Me and Larry...

... and here's one with Larry singing and tearing it up...

Larry and me...

This was part of a class project for my son. His teacher gave the class a list of names to choose from, to do a report for black history month. Among the names on the list was Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Muddy Waters, Charlie Parker... and (of all people) Larry McCray. It turns out the teacher was a big fan. Anyways, my son say's "Larry's a friend of my Dad, can I bring him into class?". Well the teacher about hit the floor!

It took a few weeks of planning but we finally pulled it off today. My son's a big shot at his school now, and ol' Dad's a hero again.

Great stuff.

'Specially about your son earning big middle school street cred and you being the hero to your son. Can NEVER have enough of those moments.

Thanks!

I can't emphasize enough about what a great great gentleman Larry McCray is. He's just as down to Earth as one could possibly imagine. Very humble. When he's off the road, he often sits in with me, or various other bands around these parts. When he can squeeze it into his busy schedule, he loves to participate in situations such as what happened today - especially for those kids. He's a real guitar hero if there ever was one!

I tried to talk Larry into doing it with acoustics, but he wanted to play electric with a small amp. So I brought out the Parts-O-Caster Tele, and my B1uesboy 5F1 amp. His Les Paul is one of those new special edition goldtops, with the gold back and sides and P-90's. I'm not a Les Paul guy at all, but that was a GORGEOUS guitar, and you can tell that it sounded great, but that's more the player than the guitar.

Larry said he'd try to make it out to my gig this Saturday. I hope so!

Thanks again guys!

Hey, I know that guy. Used to see The McCray Brothers at various bars in Saginaw all the time. Steering Gear wasn't very nice to him. I'm glad he's doing ok, I always liked him.

Very cool. I can't see or hear the clips right now because I'm at work. I'll take a look when I get home.

On the way home from a gig way back in late summer 2001, I was listening to one of the national radio stations we have. This particular night they played 3 songs as a `Tribute To Bob Dylan' (must have been near his birthday or something) When this guy came on and played 'All Along The Watchtower, I was just blown away by it. It sounded like Jimi Hendrix, but was a live version like I'd never heard before. All I caught the DJ say, was that it was from a guy by the name of Larry ????!!! (didn't catch the last part of his name - I was driving!!) and it was on a CD unavailable in the UK, but something to do with 'Live at the LA Blues Club'. Fast forward to last year, and I finally managed, after much searching, to obtain a copy of this truly magnificent version of that Dylan song by none other than Larry McCray. It isn't the live version that I originally heard, but it is just fantastic. Anyone who isn't familiar with his work ought to take a listen - A great guitarist !
