I always thought the AX suffix was used to identify models made in Korea, however, a S778AX Elite Special has turned up on ebay uk with a made in the US label inside.

Can anyone help out with this apparent anomaly or is it just me that has been misinformed all this time.

Hmmmm.  Interesting.

Here's the guitar ad...

Hmm, I'd want to see a pic of the sticker itself. Could it be the sticker identifies the home base of Ovation without it being a claim of "Made In USA"?

HERE is the listing if yo missed it above.
It looks like it might be the real deal.
It has a TRC.
You could ask for the serial number...
If it is six digits, it could be real.

Could be a typo on the label? Don't LX TRC's say "LX" on them? Might have been one of the last US ones made and they got over enthusiastic with the label? No bolts on the bridge suggest it's a US model.

OMA thanks for posting the pic of the label. I missed the scroll bar on the auction listing and thus didn't see the picture there.

The label is attached to the bowl and the bowl is made in the USA.

I once bought a "german" car. Read the fine print - transmission made in France, engine made in Germany, vehicled assembled in USA. I nicknamed it "The Mutt".

For anyone in England who is truly interested in this thing...
I messaged the guy... This is his reply:
-------------------------------------------
Hi there,

The serial number, which I assume is on the back of the headstock, reads 596101 USA.

Thanks,

Nic

Well, there have certainly been incorrect labels affixed before:

By the serial number the "Nic" sent me, that guitar was made in 2005.
There were no AX's in 2005.
So it might have been sent back to the MotherShip for repair and had that label added.
(I will not speculate further... Like "Why would the MotherShip have an AX label"...)

That's the second (apparent) LX I've seen recently with pearloid tuner buttons. Are they common? Mine are chrome.

It depends on the model. All Customs have pearloid.

Are all of the bowls still made in the USA. I remember this was an issue with many guitars where people thought they were made in the usa because the bowl is stamped "Made in the USA" as it should be, but the rest of the guitar was made and assembled in Korea

According to 2005 price list, this model does exist - USA-AX model. It looks very nice with satin finish?

They had a nice collection almost 10 years ago. This site has some pics that match those prices:
