I have a 1612 from the early 80s that was damaged during shipping. The neck snapped completely through, right where it connects to the head stock. No idea how this happened or what kind of shock was required to do it but...

Few questions here.

1) Is it possible to use the neck assembly from another model or are the neck/body connections completely different? As in, I buy another damaged guitar with a compatible neck assembly and swap it out, possibly moving over the ebony fretboard over as well.

2) Is it just not worth the repair? Sell it for parts and find another?

3) Is it practical to reattach it, at a reasonable cost of course? If so, what might that cost (to the nearest hundred)

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve...

"No idea how this happened or what kind of shock was required to do it but... "
If the headstock was not supported all that would have been needed is for them to Drop the Box.
Especially if there was already a crack in that area.

When you say that "The neck snapped completely through" do you mean that the headstock is completely severed from the neck... Or is it just really, cracked through?

HERE is a thread about a badly cracked neck that I glued in 2010...
I sold this to a friend in 2012 and he is still playing it.

ALSO HERE is one that FedEx broke in 2008. This one was totally severed at the headstock/neck joint. I repaired this also. (scroll to the top of the page)

You will notice that both of these guitars broke at an angle with the wood grain, so I was able to glue them with carpenters' glue and have them stay.
How your guitar neck is cracked/broke may determine whether you can just glue it or not.

"Is it possible to use the neck assembly from another model? "
If your guitar has a bolt-on neck, this might be possible... although I have never done it.

A Moderator will come along eventually and grant you full access...
Then you can post your question to the Bottom Feeders Luthiery Guild and maybe get some better repair advice.

Meanwhile... Welcome, you came to the right place.

Thanks man. It's completely severed at about a 45 degree angle. That second one looks exactly like it. I'll do some reading on your threads.

Did you end up using a specific brand of glue?

Seems like this gluing deal might be a good bet.

Life-Sized pic, huh?

But Yes... I would try gluing it before discarding it.
Brush any loose pieces out of there and fit it together...
I have used Elmer's Carpenters' Glue on one of mine.
Others have recommended Lotite two-part Epoxy.
(I have it in my Luthier-box, so I must have used it on something)
My Epoxy is 5 minute stuff...
I would want something that doesn't set TOO quick.

Even with the 5-min epoxy, it says to wait 24 hours for full set.
The same with the Carpenters' Glue.
There are also other Loctite products for wood.
Or whatever you already have around the house if you are a DIY-type.

But you really should try to fix it.
You can always cannibalize it for parts later if it don't work.

Good point. It's certainly worth a shot. Will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks!
