I can pick up another O with a cracked top that is also sunken in for $75.00. There is also a vintage sunburst Gibson a friend of mine's nephew has he said he'd sell cheap that has a serious crack through the side. The tone of the Gibson is very sweet and it has the famous extensive lacquer cracking all over. I've been wondering about the possibility of removing the top off the O and taking the top off the Gibson and putting it on the O. I'm mildly intrigued by the sound of the guitar I would end up with and I know the Gibson top would fit with a minimum of trimming the sides. I don't know if I would approach a luthier with the project or make it a radical DIY effort. I'm not looking to end up with a pro quality guitar, just something that works and is playable. Am I completely crazy or does this have a rat's butt chance in cat heaven of succeeding?

Not necessarily. If the gibson's scale length and number of frets to the body are the same then why not? As long as the Gibson's soundboard is bigger than the Ovation it COULD very well be possible. And for $75, it would keep you out of the pub for a few weekends, so what you would normally spend on beer, you'd be spending on the 'project', so, in effect, it's costing you nothing... You're tangling with some serious engineering & aesthetics issues here. I don't think it's worth it, and you will end up with kindling a rip in the Universe's fabric. Not a good thing.

You're tangling with some serious engineering & aesthetics issues here. I don't think it's worth it, and you will end up with kindling a rip in the Universe's fabric. Not a good thing. It was just an idea to take two trashed guitars and combine their usable parts back into one working guitar. I was curious what an O would sound like with a vintage Gibson top, have the tools to do it, and the tenacity to give it a go. Nothing to lose really and I COULD end up with a unique guitar. I realize the heresy of the project.

Have fun in the laboratory!
