New poster here,

Does anyone know if the finish on a early 70's Ovation is a 1 or 2 part urethane?

And if so what would be a good stripper. (yes I know a few of the dance variety so no wise cracks)

I'm working on a old guitar and would like to refinish the top but keep it close to the neck finish.

Thanks

I am not sure, but isn't the Ovation finish Polyester?
And I think that this stuff is Bulletproof.
A quick search shows people using a Heat Gun.
I would not want to do that with an Ovation.

Thanks for the reply.

Polyurethane is a polyester. If it is catalyzed it is a linear polyurethane which is much tougher.

I agree, a heat gun sounds like a great way to get a crack! I'll start digging through the archives. I asked Ovation but they chose not to respond to that question. Long enough ago perhaps, that newer people in the company don't know.

Uh... Yeah, that is what I think it is.
If you do a search for "catalyzed polyester Ovation" you will find many references to it.

Thank you OMA. I like your guitar art approach. Did you go over the top of the polyester or sand back to wood?

I've seen all carbon cellos and basses, Ovation must have tested some prototypes....if the poly had fiberglass with it it would be bullet proof. In the NW a play in the rain guitar has a lot of possibilities.

If you are talking about the Orange Flamer in my avatar...
That is a Stock Ovation Paint-Job. (from back in the good-ole-daze)

Ovation did Red, Orange, Blue, and Gray... Plus a Purple and Yellow Tribal Flame.

And I thought they wore respirators in the paint booth! Nothing like a creative company.

The search "refinishing" turned up the most returns and answered more questions than I had.
