Joined: December 2008 Posts: 252 Location: Seattle | Purchased a 2 pick-up Viper from Trading Musician in Seattle. For the guitars age (30+ years) it is in remarkable shape. The set up is good and the tuning is correct at both the 12th fret and the harmonic. Included was an original (non-punctured or cracked) case. Questions for the brethren of the OFC: >The pick guard has a minor chip damage on a corner by the fretboard.... any advice where to purchase a new one? >As it has a maple fretboard, looking for suggestions on how to clean it. >The original case lid strap is torn (the strap that keeps the lid from opening up 180").... has anyone tried to replace one? I think the lid top has a screw that holds the strap... but the other end inside the pocket is unknown. >Any general advice about the guitar that might be helpful.

There are several companies that make aftermarket guards on the web. >As it has a maple fretboard, looking for suggestions on how to clean it. Guitar polish, same as you'd use for the rest of the guitar. It is the same finish i believe >The original case lid strap is torn (the strap that keeps the lid from opening up 180").... has anyone tried to replace one? I think the lid top has a screw that holds the strap... but the other end inside the pocket is unknown. There shouldn't be any screws, so it obviously busted on the other side too. I've had the same issue for decades on my UKII. A screw or some other sort of home-made solution is all I got for that one >Any general advice about the guitar that might be helpful. Play in good health. It's an awesome guitar, congrats! Edited by Damon67 2013-03-05 2:38 PM

I like to use a cord with a right-angle plug- or a very short barrel- on my Viper so it doesn't pull too much. You see lots of them with cracked pickguards down by the jack.

Viper pickguards are notorious, mostly for cracking around the jack, like mine. The aftermarket ones won't say "Viper" on them. I have the same problem with the strap on my Viper case on the end inside the case. I tried gluing the frayed edges of the strap and screwing it to the case, but it tore out again with the slightest pull from the lid. Since I hardly use cases, it stays broken for now. No advice from this guy on how to play it. The pickups are great for some twangy Tele sounds or most anything else I'll ever think of. Work your way up the neck, especially if you play along with someone with a 22 fret neck. That's the only time I could ever play something my guitar teacher couldn't.
