In the past I have always freely given that information but I have started to notice that there are a large number of guitars (on eBay) that have the full serial number blacked out. My question is... is there a reason why I should not provide the full SN? Should I be concerned?

it is also why when really interest I will ask for a pic of a specific area of the guitar. A legitimate seller will have no problem with this while most scammers will not be able to comply. Edited by stephent28 2013-01-09 10:07 AM

However I will typically ask for some key info about the serial number so I can (depending on the brand) determine which factory, date range, etc.

However I will typically ask for some key info about the serial number so I can (depending on the brand) determine which factory, date range, etc. When selling a guitar on ebay, I specifically include the full serial number in the listing, for that very reason. Why would I not want a potential buyer to have the opportunity to research the instrument thoroughly?

Most people never read or post on the Discussion Boards unless they have had a bad experience, so the readers of those boards think that there are many more scams on eBay that there actually are... Those readers become pro-active to prevent possible trouble. One way is limiting access to the serial number. People think that someone could use the serial number to claim that it the guitar was stolen, use the serial number for a warranty claim, or some other scam... Who Knows? 99% of those concerns are unfounded, but spreading paranoia is what the internet is all about!

If the serial is significant to the item, such as to verify date or the like, than I will likely include it. If it's of no consequence, than I don't. If someone asks for a serial, I'll likely give it to them as well. Pictures on the other hand are a running joke. So far 12 years and counting, if someone asks for additional pictures they aren't buying it. I don't know why, but Alpep mentioned this to me early on, and I've sorta tracked it over the years. I'm thinking that maybe once someone asked for an additional picture and then bought the item, but I can't remember the actual instance, but it seems like it happened once.
