i was just doing the usual sunday lay back day watching some you tube's when i ran across one of my favorite bands from the sixties.
procol harum was one of the most obscure bands that fit into the music scene back then .
i was surprised to see that they are still touring . i cannot remember ever hearing about them playing anywhere near me ( detroit ) area since the seventies and we have concerts every single night around here.
has anyone else here ever seen them in concert or heard of them playing in their area in the last twenty years or so?
gary brooker still has that mysterious deep voice that defines the band.
here is one of my favorites . GWB

They just toured with Yes. Brooker is the only original one, but they still sounded good.

Here's an obscure one still touring: THE GOOD RATS

Well, they're probably no more obscure than Procol Harum; POCO is still around. There have been many permutations of that band also, but Rusty Young has always been there. They still sound great live, too.

There aren't too many groups left from the sixties still playing with ALL the original members these days…

( …sigh… )

However, thanks to Miami Steve Van Zandt, ALL FOUR of the original RASCALS are planning to reunite in New York in December:

RASCALS REUNION

April Wine is obscure? Not up here, where they've played every bar, dancehall, and arena (in the day) that would seat more than ten people.
They are the greatest Canadian band (not my cuppa, but still....) to never win a Juno. (Canadian Grammy) Though they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Just one of many great bands to come out of the Halifax music scene.

Now the Rascals reunion.....that ranks just under Beatles and wa-ay over the Eagles reunion in my book.
About on par with the Police reunion.

Another great, under-appreciated/obscure band touring now is Renaissance with original members Annie Haslam and Michael Dunford. That's one I'll be seeing when they come to town!

can anyone say "WISHBONE ASH!"? Rather obscure Stateside, but makers of some profound albums: "Argus" (1972) is the BEST:

However, Wishbone Ash (I), Pilgrimage, and Wishbone IV deserve high praise. They have gone through many permutations but Andy Powell keeps them running a touring (they have been circulating in the UK recently). Martin Turner, Steve Upton and Ted Turner have come and gone... Their music in the last 20 years has many superb moments.

I just saw one of my favorite bands from my teen years in the early 80's, Y&T. Dave Meniketti kicked bootay! If anyone knows who they are (Bobbo might), I iPhoned Black Tiger (solo is the highlight)...

I also managed to grab a bill off the wall and got the band to sign it. fun night.

Brought me back for sure. Last time I was at a Y&T show was late 80's at the now defunct Manteca Waterslides with a half naked girl on my shoulders for most the show. I can barely stand through a full show anymore.

"a great band that you don't hear about any more but they are still around"

LOL... I guess I'm struggling with the "hear about" portion of the question. With most decent Radio and music TV gone, the only place we "hear" about any of our favorites is when WE look them up. I have pretty much found all bands I have looked up and they mostly are all still around in one form or another. Some people still ask if Blue Oyster Cult is still around and I still answer.... they still play 100+ shows a year.

This is probably the biggest dynamic shift in the logistical side of the "music biz" Gone are the days of the numberous radio and tv ads for concerts and big tours. Even the current "Arena" tours will pass through your town un-noticed unless you are a fan or just checking the local venue to see who's playing. I know we have some people here who have at least heard of Blue Oyster Cult. How many know about the huge 40th anniversary concert this weekend in Times Square ?? I'm guessing only us fans... and that's my point.

Yup. We all live in little silos of information now where those in one silo don't know what's all the rage in the next one over.

I couldn't believe how many 20-30somethings had never heard of The Police when the reunion tour was announced. Of course, most of them weren't born at the time they were the biggest-ish thing in the world.....but still.

And, most amazing of all, Dylan was a star BEFORE the real start of real Rock n' Roll (1965?) and he has yet another acclaimed new album out and tours like crazy. I'm not a huge fan, but hats off to Bobby Zimmermann!

i guess that i have forgot about allot of the bands that i use to hear all the time back in the sixties and seventies on the radio like wishbone ash , spooky tooth , quicksilver messenger service , spirit and so on and so on.
there were so many of them when you look back .
after purchasing a new car a few months ago it came along with free x.m. radio for 3 months and that is what opened me up and renewed my interest in bands that were long forgotten in my memory banks so i really didn't think about looking for any band tours or concerts of these bands because i totally forgot about them.
i guess if it is out of sight or sound it is out of mind.
x.m. radio opened up allot of memories and good times that i had forgotten about , just like the computer has done to others
now my senile old *** can remember what bands to look up on the puter .
i love that x.m. radio . GWB

They've played the Toronto area quite a bit in the last 20 years. I kinda regret not going because I listened to them a lot in the early 70s to 80s. I didn't think of them as obscure but in hindsight maybe they were. Good writing both music and lyrics. I think they had a guy who just wrote lyrics and it seemed to me that he must have been classically educated because a lot of the them reflected classical literature. Another thing too is that, as a young person, you got exposure to classical music from these guys and a few other bands of that era. Not much of that these days though.

They played in the living room of Edgerton's which was a Victorian home turned into a grad club kind of bar across the street from Ryerson. I remember driving by on a rainy Thursday night and seeing the sign "The Police"...lol

I saw them a couple of times in Toronto back in the 70s.

They played our high school and we had maybe 700 inmates in grade 9 to 13. The Flower Traveling band played there as well - remember them ? Kind of a Japanese Black Sabbath...lol

Steppen Wolf played at the HS in the next town over as well as Rush who were just a local bar band back then.

Then there was McKenna, Mendelson Mainline who pretty much ripped the place apart...lol
