Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Here is a quick explanation of the switches and how they work: The two silver switches that are side by side operate the two pickups as you would expect. It sounds like they are switching them from double coil to single coil. The single silver switch only works when the main selector (black) switch is in the middle position engaging both pickups. That switch puts the pickups in and out of phase. The pickups are original and very early...the designer has passed by now but built these entirely by hand...the machining on the coils is great and the guitar sounds great; it can sound like just about any other guitar with the combination of switches and split coils of the pickups...interestingly enough, these are humbucking pickups that can become single coils with a switch...this is an extremely loud guitar; but the volume control makes it tame and can elicit wonderful soulful tones as well as incredible sustain...I believe this will play any kind of music...I really like it...way cool!

Mr O has one (or had) that has similar split pickups... sorta like a G&L Mike, I don't know how those are humbuckers unless they're stacked. Looks like a single coil split in 2. Maybe that's a phase switch you're playing with? Or something like what the UKII has on each pup? It's real cool, however it works. Congrats! Noah.... They need to hire some drivers like that out here!

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Damon, I have no idea sans any kind of a manual...I know what the original owner told me which I have passed on here...Since he knew the fellow who made the pickups, he probably knows more than most: however, you may be correct...it is a very interesting setup...I saw the pictures Mr. O has in his stable...seems like none are the same...didn't see one like this (I think he has three or four remaining). The guitar plays very nicely: well balanced, great neck, cool sounds and not too heavy...interesting guitar... |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Mike... you use the term "original owner" a bit loosely... LOL.. I have a description of that guitar and how it came about. I'm still looking for that cap for you and I can send a copy of the paper with it. The paper is really from THE original owner.  I was under the impression only one had those pickups in it... but obviously not. We should check serial numbers to see which one was made first, although the prototypes were kinda made all about the same time. |

Send me your mailing address, I don't think you included it in your last email. Also I was just joshing about the "original owner" thing as these were all essentially prototypes... all 22-ish of them, who was the original owner really...LOL... I guess whomever ended up with one was....
I just get a chuckle because deep down I believe these guitars had something special going on, particularly the ones that were routed for standard pickups. I do have one with UKII pickups in it which rocks and is one of my favorites, but from a what-guitar-would-have-really-sold-had-they-actually-gone-into-production, I think it was the PF-22. Maybe Carvin was one step ahead, I'm not sure of the timeline without using the google machine, but the DC Neck-Thru series are still some of their best sellers. The design of the PF-22 in the same way lends itself to different bridges and different pickup arrangements. Plenty of wood to work with, but still light enough to configure it any which way you want. Basically all the GS-1,2,3 options with or without a tremolo bridge. If I had the $'s I'd have someone built me a PF-22 copy with Kahler pro in it, but for now, I'm in the market for an older Carvin with a Kahler in it. |
