Joined: February 2009 Posts: 54 Location: Dayville, Connecticut | Okay folks. today I picked up my new/antique amp from my brother (now know as my favorite brother!) It's in fairly decent shape and is functional for the most part. The "clean channel" sounds great but the "acid rock" channel is crackling. (which I believe is from the horn...it has a broken dome) The front panel is a Model K-6001 pr-amp and the lower rear panel is a Model K-6100 power amp. There appears to be four 12" speakers in the cab below the horn and pre-amp. I haven't opened the panels yet but I did try it briefly (since I knew my brother used it a bit and didn't start any fires!) I will check it out more carefully before I spend any time running it. I would appreciate any and all suggestions/ideas from the amp gurus here. I'ld like to restore it as much as possible and keep it inthe family. Thanks for looking... Rick C.

But they sound great and are built like tanks. If it turns out you need a new horn, I have original replacements, just let me know the model on the horn. The amps are pretty straight forward but some models had "plug in" modules... so just clean the contacts and re-seat them if that is the situation. Other than that... you have a great brother!!

Awesome! I will be talking with you about the horn. I plugged in on channel 2 (labeled "acid rock")last night and it wasn't as crackling as the other day after spinning the pots around a bit...probably some corrosion in there. The driver might be okay after all, but the dome on the horn is certainly missing, and I'll bet the horn has cracks in th center. Channel one sounds as clean and sharp as my tutors Fender tube so I'm pretty stoked about that. It may be a couple of weeks before I get a chance to open it up to clean the contacts...got a big family reunion this weekend. (might be a few ovations there ; ). Yes...It was very decent of my brother to give me this little treasure! Thanks for the response, Sir Rick C.

I wanted one of those amps, but I didn't have a truck at the time to carry it around. They sounded great, and Ovation was one of the names to have along with the Kustom rolled and pleated equipment. That strat looks like a "70's model, also.

He has a ton of knowledge on the vintage Ovation amps. It is in very good shape. My Uncle played some but he had several Ovations to choose from and the amp spent most of it's life as a doorway gate to keep the family poodle out of part of the house. then I believe his son used it as a baby-gate until he offered it to my brother. And it was kept under a cover all that time so it really didn't get used as much as most amps. There is a dent in the preamp faceplate that looks to be fairly easy to fix and I know enough about cleaning electronic components to clean up the pots and contacts, and, Mr Ovation has let me know he may have parts for the broken horn. So this looks promising... Rick c.

I cleaned and lubed all the pots and switches, pulled the cards to clean the contacts and dust the components (canned air), and gave it a general vacuuming and washdown with vinly cleaner. It came out fine and the pops and crackles are gone. The inside was nearly spotless but I'm glad I opened it because I found a poor solder joint on the pot to the horn and repaired it. Here are a few more pics: Pretty clean right from the start! The power amp the preamp 30 plus(?) year old rubber bands still intact (replaced with zip ties) Even the speakers are still "like new" The "after" shots Even close up it looks excellent. The only things missing are the dome for the horn and a badge next to the ovation badge at the top. Thanks for looking, Rick C. Edited by deadfish 2012-08-13 8:41 AM
