Location: Foothills of Mt. Rainier | Hey Ovation lovers,
I went to the Bluegrass jam last night and just laid down a stunner. We take turns calling the tunes and when it was my turn I called out the changes for Rodney Crowell's song, After all this time. We had about 40 players in the circle last night and the sound was amazing. I was singing the lead part and and a young lady added in a high harmony part and it was just amazing. It was the best that you can ever hope that music will give you. It is a simple song with a message that all of us can understand. My beloved Ovation gave its' best and my fellow bluegrass jammers gave their best and we all had a great time. Rodney Crowell writes great songs and I did my best to not screw it up. After our jam session we all share a pot luck late supper and talk. So many folks came up and complemented me on my song choice. It was different from our usual song fare but I decided to try it anyway and it went so well.
Course I am the guy that trys to call out Kiss Unplugged tunes also...that usually does not work...but I keep callin out for "Beth" and hopin. Remember guys...I am on the far side of 60 years...I still like to rock some...especially on my Ovations.

I get to have the same fun on Monday nights--play in a band with 10 other pickers. (They tolerate me because I'm the one singing the high harmonies... ;) ) Glad to hear it went so well--I'm the Ovation "representative" in our band, too.

I do have entirely too much fun at these bluegrass jams.We generally do about 2 a month and rotate around the SE Washington area at various Senior Centers because they usually have plenty of room and space to perform. We always have a potluck dinner in the evening and that encourages folks to come in and play or just listen.Mostly senior age folks like myself but all ages are welcome and show up. Bluegrass brings out a different type of guitar player than just about anything else I have been around. WE have a hard core group of about 20 or 25 folks that will show up anytime at all and have had as high 60+ folks show up. Not everybody plays guitar however and we get fiddlers, banjos, mandolins,bass players and percussion type stuff like washboards and spoon players too. We had a HS Senior from Sumner a month or so ago that literally took our breath away! She was the most incredible singer and guitarist I have heard in years. Our Bluegrass jams are about fun and family and music....and of course...food. With the folks I have met a Wintergrass in Tacoma over the years I think I have about 2 lifetimes worth of people to jam with. I am a very average guitar player and a below average singer but really enjoy life and playing songs with our Ovation guitars. I would encourage everyone to get outside their comfort zone and get involved in community music...you just might be pleasently surprised. I sure was!
