I just got back from the Tacoma WA Guitar Center. Saw this on the wall and it is a sweet unit. They are asking $1,399.00

I can't remember the whole story around the "N" number on these, anybody know the story?

If memory serves me, the "N" Ovations are small run custom guitars for the Japanese market and the "N" stood for Nakao. I think they may be a distributor.

That's the small bell I had going off in my head.

"N" Japan market
"88" Top Resonant Frequency

Serial 7173

It played nice and had enormous sound. Still considering going back there to buy it...

I think the "B" looks similar to a "8" and it's surely a 1881 "NB8" (for No-Burst blue) and not "N88".
When it's a Nakao model, the "N" is usually placed before the model number and not before the top frequency but I can be wrong.

I think Jerome is right:
I have one of these and the # is 1881-NB5 and it is a black one.
It's a wonderful playable and sounding guitar even really loud for the small body.

Bobo and Jerome are correct - the other part is that only the best of the best units went to Nakao in Japan. At times they would order special modifications only for the Japanese market; a twist on a production model to make it unique. I was told every single guitar was checked over for any non conformances once they arrived in Japan. 'These 500 units are going to Nakao and they need to be perfect.'

If you have an opportunity to buy one I'd go for it.

So this is an NB8 serial 7173... Model 1881

It was impressive. Might have to go back this week...

This is an earlier 1881 w/ the OP24 preamp. I suspect you could talk them down on the price, maybe closer to $1100 even with an Ovation case. I don't think pre-owned Ovation or Adamas prices are real strong right now to justify $1399. But it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

I love my 1881. Someone should grab this one--they don't come along too often.

And when combined with the superior handling and feel of the SSB, the precise reason why I personally prefer them over all other shapes and sizes.
