Any interest in an OFC Winterfest Ski/Jam?

This is something that I was part of with another organization for a number of years and it was always one of the highlights of my year. When Mark-in-Boise dropped by some months ago to visit the man cave for a few hours, we had a brief discussion about the possibility of an OFC winter gathering. Of course, its too early for commitments of any sort, but is there sufficient interest in the idea to at least invest some energy in creating a possible plan and cost estimate, possibly for 2013? Some initial thoughts would be to make it a long weekend, maybe four or five days with Wednesday and Sunday serving as travel days, possibly scheduled in late January or early February during the "value" season when lodging, lift tickets and gear rental is discounted, and when the slopes still have excellent snow, but excluding the MLK and President’s Day holiday weekends when lodging costs skyrocket. We just so happen to have some pretty nice destination areas here in Colorado. We might even schedule it immediately after the NAMM show in case somebody wanted to stop in Colorado on their way home. Mark suggested a few others in Idaho and I’m sure there are other locations as well. Another idea might be to rent as many ski-in/out condos in a single block as it would take to accommodate the group, teaming up on the rooms, then designate one condo (typically the largest) for group meals, i.e., breakfast and dinner each day prepped by either members of the group or by a contract chef (I have contacts). We could also look for a unit that would be willing to provide a secure conference room for evening jams and an open mic, and they all have hot tubs. Evenings on the town are also a possibility. Day skiers would be responsible for their own lift tickets and equipment (rental gear is always readily available), although we could likely obtain some very good discounts. If we’re not too extravagant, and not having investigated next year’s costs, I believe we could keep the cost close to $100/night per person for beds and meals, assuming multiple unit occupancy, maybe even less. Transportation would be on your own, and shuttles and rental cars are readily available. Some destination areas have local regional airports. These areas also provide lots of alternative day activities for non-skiers. Is there any interest? As a participant? In event planning? Organizing and assisting during the event? Anybody have any other ideas for something like this? Just brainstorming.

Rather, it would be just an informal get-together of some of the members of the OFC.

Yeah, had this trip planned for 6 months, and arrived in Denver to 75 degree weather and no snow! Snowmobiling and dogsledding were both canceled, but did get a few days of very wet skiing in at Breck. Breckenridge is a beautiful town however, so all was not lost...had a lot of fun. Good luck with this trip anyways!

If you're like me and aren't into snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snow shoeing are great activities to get you out in the woods and get a little exercise. Novices don't realize that their body warms them up fast on cross-country skis or snow shoes so that the heavy clothes for downhill skiing aren't necessary. Nothing cozier than sitting around the fireplace playing guitar and singing. We ended up having a great ski year here, although the start of the season was the latest in history. We stayed in a huge condo in Steamboat (Colorado), but that might be a bit tough to get to, especially hauling guitars on small planes in the winter. Our local ski hill (15 miles from downtown Boise) has several condos that we might be able to get and the upper lodge is right next door. There might be a possibility of renting out one floor of the lodge for jams at night, or they might let us jam for the entertainment of the other guests. They just changed management, though and I'm not sure if the new group will be as accomodating as the old. Our cabin in McCall is small, but could probably hold 10-15 of us in the living room for a jam. It's a couple hundred yards from the nearest cross-country trail in a huge state park, snow shoeing is available right out the door and a nice, rarely crowded ski area is about a 30 minute drive. The only problem is would be driving 100 miles from the airport in Boise, but to me that would be better than flying into Denver International and driving from there to the closest mountain. It took me 45 minutes just to get to downtown Denver and the rental car cost $350 for 4 days, not counting parking. The next time I took the shuttle for $22 and it only took an hour. As I've said many times before, I'm up for hosting a jam at our cabin in the summer as well. Might be to late for this summer, but next year would be good.

My wife has only seen snow once about 5 years ago and was like a little kid playing in it. Add hanging out with OFC folks and evenings of jamming. It sounds like a lot of fun. We'd be interested. Great idea Brad and Mark! Edited by Designzilla 2012-05-04 8:25 PM

If there is interest in Utah skiing this is the resort I would recommend for a guitar get together. Lots of ski town restaurants and bars to invade, plus of course great skiing. The other Utah resorts have skiing at least as good if not better than Park City but they don't have the ambiance. I am up for anything within driving distance, so anywhere in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, or Nevada works for me. If Alison has a ski hill in Hot Springs I'd go as far as South Dakota again
