I already know that leaving an Ovation plugged in with the FET electronics will drain the battery, but that was not the case here. ... I had new electronics put in this over a year ago during a refinish job at the factory, and haven't had any problem with it until now. I was practicing with the band before church yesterday, and noticed through my Aviom that every other string sounded weak. I know from experience that was an indicator of the battery going bad. I put a new battery in from a package in my gig bag, and it did the same thing. I then borrowed another battery from another player, who had just bought a brand new pakage of batteries, and everything seemed to work fine... untill about 15 minutes later, when the same thing began. The next thing that came to mind is a possible short in the 1/4" connector. I am using the same cord that I always use with other instruments also with no problems. Anyone have any simular experiences or ideas???

vince it is still winter ( may ) in northern michigan and the cold eats up batteries , i am sure that by august when the ice melts off the lakes that this problem will go away for a month or so until the winter sets back in . GWB

Ha HA HA! It's 72 here right now and stormy. I am amazed you are the first to respond to my inquiry after 95+ views of this post. I guess I'm just going to have to bite-the-bullet and pay a shop to check out the connector.

gremlins?  9-volt vampires?  solar flares?

Seriously though, checking the guitar's 1/4" jack for a short (not disconnecting power when unplugged) is where I'd start.

If you're a DIYer, Google: how to test / fix a guitar output jack for lots of info.

Just askin'... does the Ovation stereo jack require using a guitar cable that has stereo TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) connectors?

Or is the Ovation stereo output designed for a pair of mono connector cables plugged into each jack and then joined with via a stereo Y connector, then into a 1/4" stereo cable?

For it to be stereo, don't two seperate signals need to be sent through the cable to the amp?

I think you need a special cable that splits the signal from the stereo jack to 2 different amps. I've never used the stereo jack, except accidentally, and it does just what you experienced. Every other string. Unless you want to split the signal to two amps, just use the mono jack.

Woah! .... I didn't even think to check if I was plugging into the right jack! Thanks for the wake-up call!

It's an 'insert cable' that's needed for the stereo jack. If you intend to use it in a live setting it's probably best to buy a better quality cable than what was originally shipped with the guitar. The same cable works for the stereo outputs on the Preacher/UKII etc., and also the VXT for splitting between an acoustic and electric amp.

Planet Waves makes a decent one....

INSERT CABLE
