Ditto what Stephen said...In 40 years of Fire and Rescue work, the worst accidents I have seen always involved drinking....and usually kills someone other than the drunk driver....

Sad story indeed.

On the lighter side (and not to make light of the tragedy)

A priceless moment that will live on. Whole new meaning to "Headbanger" ...

Tunes to play for Phil.

Foreigner – Headknocker
Quiet Riot - Bang Your Head (Metal Health)
Pat Travers - Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)
Santogold - Lights Out
Dio - Rainbow in the dark
Hank Williams - Saw The Light
Simon and Garfunkel - By the Light..

and of course...

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By the Light (yes I know it's a Springsteen tune.. I like MM's version better)

Seriously, though.. be careful out there.

Only loss and lessons, no winning in punishment. Only more pain if you don't.

how does this work..

"four counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated"

I can understand the four counts of 2nd degree murder as there were four victims, but how can you be charged for doing something in the same instance 4 times?

Not like it really matters at this point, but just curious.

Very tragic. This is why the laws have gotten so strict. But it still happens. Safer to stay home or take public transportation. And never, ever let anyone drive drunk.

Most of the time nothing happens. But look at the risk.

As to the question, the operative words are "causing death". Since there were four deaths, there are four charges.

Probably not in my lifetime, but maybe during some of the younger members' lifetimes, vehicles will be equipped with a pass/fail device that senses a person's blood alcohol level. An automatic reading beyond a predeterined level by the device results in the vehicle ceasing to operate. The technology exists today to make this a reality, but there continues to be strong opposition from those who believe there are already too many rules interfering with the free exercise of personal liberties. If people can't or don't correct this continuing problem on their own, rest assured there will, someday, be a legislative solution.
