I've made a small comparison between two FD14 :
- FD14 #08 with steel strings
- FD14 #37 with nylon strings
You'll find the different sound samples in this topic.
It is in french, but for each guitar I've played :
- two sound samples : accoustic (T-Bone SCT700 micro) and plugged in (no effect, direct on the sound card)
- two types of music : arpege and strumming |

I tried nylons on mine once and veyr much liked it. I only have one, so I could not really do side by side. Interesting comparison would be FD14 Nylon and a regular Ovation Classical. |

thanks for the samples! The nylon samples sound somehow better than the steel samples. Maybe its the recording setup. What is your direct side-by-side impression?

Location: Le Havre (France) | Firts of all, I've never owned a nylon string guitar.
So I can't make a comparison with an O Classical, even it is a good idea Dave.
My personal impression is that I'm really surprise to hear such a good sound for a guitar built for steel strings.
I played the guitar plugged into an acoustic amp, a JAM PLUS 150 (sorry, no sample done). The result is really really good !
The cedar table is probably the origine of such a warm nylon sound !
I think that I will keep one of the FD14 with these nylon strings. But I need to change the nut. Bass nylon strings (E and A strings) are thiner than steel ones. So there is a small buzz when I play them. No worry with other strings.
After it is a different confort : playing a nylon guitar is more mellow than a steel strings one. Tension in the strings is weak.
I'm very happy, for me FD14 is the best Ovation I've played. She suits to my way of playing guitar. And I love its looking.
So now I've a nylon string and it is a FD14 :) |

Gauges nylon strings I used are : .028 .032 .040 .032 .038 .044
Gauges steel strings I had before putting nylon strings were : .011-.015-.022-.032-.042-.052
No worry with G, B and E strings : with the tension, they become a little thicker and feat the nut without any problem.
Instead of messing the nut, you probably can put a small piece of sheet paper to avoid the buzz on E and A strings. |
