Location: Jax, Fl or Lost in Ga woods, again | I've been visiting this site for a while,excited to join,I will buy a Ovation real soon,so I joined, Please help the Newbie w/post on your opinion & experience on Epaulets vs. center Soundhole,( or is there much actual difference)Not much here in town to compare.I have narrowed down to a Mid-Bowl, but first choice is a Contour (tried one at GC, won't buy there).will get a USA made, but gets confusing from there! I don't play out, mostly w/ friends/family, mostly unplugged, but like to plug-in occasionally. Thanks for your help! Greg |

Location: Tennessee | Welcome aboard. With a handle like yours, you ought to find this a pretty interesting place.
You'll get a whole bunch of different opinions here. There is a store in Fernandina Beach that has a real nice used Legend Limited for sale, but that's a deep bowl. You ought to go check it out just for the opportunity to see what you think. IMHO, they don't get much better than that, and this particular guitar was well cared for by a pretty damn fine guitar player. |

You're right about Jax GC. I wouldn't buy a git from them, either. As far as traditional Ovation (center soundhole) versus Elite/Adamas (epaulets) there are tons of preferences. Mind you, those features aren't necessarily what give a particular git its tone. Top composition/grade of wood, bracing pattern, bowl depth, etc. all have major effects. Then you have to consider neck style (shape & width). Best advice is to play as many as you can until you find one that "speaks" to you. A great place to do just that is at an OFC gathering. There's one coming up in late June in Greenville, SC. Check out this thread for more info.
To give you an idea of the variety you might be able to try out, here's what folks brought to my house for a gathering I hosted just last January:
Definitely take a drive up to Fernandina and check out that O. Go on a Wednesday and listen to an original song by our very own Mauvais Beal at the Frisky Mermaid (inside the Florida House) for songwriter's night. And stick around, this is a great community full of wonderful folks.

Even in a major city (sorta) it is surprising how little selection of Ovation's they have here.

To answer your question, I mainly play poorly,,,,came over to git from keyboard, rock n roll baby, hey I grew up in LS-ville, really,, been to a few parties in Green Cove.........., but trying not to tell my age,, or too many things in the past, ya know, late bloomer on guitar, but it occupies my time, if not twisting a wrench, |

I think it's called Island Tobacco and Trade and it's on Centre Street at about 3rd. Mike and Sherry are real nice people. If you go play that Legend Ltd you'll probably fall in love. It's a dark nutmeg stain, my favorite color Ovation. |

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | Your 'late guitar start' sounds similar to mine. So I'd say start with a center hole deep bowl since you'll be unplugged at least half of the time.
One other suggestion, have someone play the 'O's you're interested in while you sit in front and listen.

As a sort-of newbie....or recent reborn guitar player, let me tell you my best purchase decision so far. I bought a used S771 center hole, cutaway mid bowl. I have since bought another 6 guitars and sold off one (this is all since February). The Ovation is now my only true acoustic. With the cutaway, I can still put Joe Perry (and Slash) leads together but I also hear it without an amp.
Absolutely, positively try out the guitar you're going to buy before you buy it. There's a lot of crap out there (I've bought some of it myself). You might find nice used stuff but I have found that Ovation is not a brand that people just let go for low dollars. Look around and find something nice. The guy who sold me my ovation let me spend about 2 hours at his house playing, looking and hearing him play. Not everyone will put up with that....
I'll also comment on Guitar Center.. As with any business, the people at a particular store make all the difference. I'm at my local GC at least 4 hours a week. The guitar manager is great, has helped me a lot and has welcomed my questions.....even when I didn't buy a particular guitar from them. I actually just bought one of his personal guitars... They have a great policy, where if you want to try a guitar, simply order it on line. You get it with no shipping charge and it comes with a 30 day trial. If you don't like the model, brand or the particular guitar that they shipped you, bring it into the store and get your money back. That's an option for you anyways. I recently bought a used Godin from the local GC and only did so because of the 30 day trial period. Otherwise, I'd have left it in the store and missed out on my favorite solid-body electric.

I think there's a local SCCA guy who has a real Cobra. He brings it out once in awhile to autocrosses, when he doesn't bring one of his race cars. |
