You'd be better off to get a Lanikai, Kala, Bushman, Vineyard, ... something like that. They are chinese made laminates but play and sound miles better than the Ovation. If you're hell bent on a plastic back look at Fluke.
I guess the upside would be that a 5 year old might be pretty jazzed to have an instrument that looks sorta like Daddy's. Maybe that would prompt him to want to play more, who knows.
The ovation ukes are "cute" but more like an ovation lovers novelty. I guess "OK" plugged in. My specific complaints are that the neck is far too think, the whole instrument is very head heavy, very poor acoustic tone and volume, very difficult to hold in a traditional uke manner.
I've owned center holes, multiholes, acoustic only, electrified, soprano, tenors, palm trees, different colors and finishes. The result is always the same, I dump it and buy a real ukulele instead.
Just my opinion, but based on quite a lot of experience. |

Contact Paul Templeman. He was in business selling many of these type ukes in the UK. He's since moved on and formed his own company and don't know if he still sells them, but he can give you a wealth of information. I know the couple that I got from him were very nice. |
