This is what an open instrumental jam session looks like at a bass forum get-together from a few weeks ago. Three bass players all jamming at once, with drums, and yours truly on the the far right with my trusty Strat. Even with all the power from two racks of gear powering these three basses, I was able to cut through with just my little twin twelve Fender. These guys like funk and there was a whole lot of slappin' and poppin' goin' on here.

It must have been a Friday, since they turned off the Bud sign.

Great observation, Cap'n. It was neon. Somebody must've tipped them off that I would be there.

Brad, they're all staring at you.
You either muffed a note so badly even bass players and drummers noticed, played a really hot lead, or farted.

With creative use of an assortment of pedals, you can pretty much get any sound you want (or don't want) these days. The short guy in the center was an outstanding musician and a primary organizer of the event. He essentially played lead on the bass and we tossed it back and forth. It was all two-chord funk so there really wasn't all that much to mess up even during the leads.

Brad plays a mean lead. They were staring because he was jaw-dropping amazing.

No, that's just how bass players normally look.

;) . Were you actually playing a Twin? I don't know many people who can turn one up above 3 or 4 unless they are playing to an arena. Maybe the look on the bassists is dumbfoundedness at their ears being blown out by a little old Fender?

When I had my last band ('91 - '93), my stage rig was a pair of late '60's Twins, my '57 RI Strat, and a Boss CE-2 chorus pedal. I ran my Elites through the PA. What a sound they had but I don't miss carrying the weight of those bad boys around...My lead guitar player used one of my custom built strats w/ a '64 Super Reverb and a '66 Deluxe Reverb...I have pic's somewhere if I can find them...Wow, Brad, that brings back memories...

Last band I was in, I played my Fender P through a 300W SWR head driving a 1 x 15" and a 4 x 10" cab.

I was constantly on '9'.

Our lead guitarist played his PRS through a 30 watt Marhall and never went over 2. He usually set it to about 1 and a half.

It's not hard to drown out a bass.
