So I'm looking at buying an Ovation (if for no other reason than I am a complete sucker for the multi-hole look).

The guitar that I've played at a local Sam Ash is an Ovation Elite 1778T (but it has an OP-Pro, instead of an OP-30). It's absolutely amazing, and I love the low end. My only possible problem with it is that, unplugged, the low can overpower the high too much.
So the other guitar that I'm looking at (and have not played), is an Ovation 2778LX Standard Elite Contour. I love the idea of this because it's a deep contour. But as I haven't played this, I don't know if it's better, sound-wise.

I play all sorts of styles, but am working on some light jazz. But as of currently, I play lots of Sufjan Stevens, Say Anything, and generally light acoustic sounds.

I just love how full the 1778T sounds, and I really love that the multi-holes are only on one side (for the low notes). Also, I love that the 1778T is textured, so I wouldn't have to worry about smudges or anything.

Let me know what you think.

First off, Welcome Paravillintiniay !

There are many available options and flavors. Do you have a price range, play plugged in more than unplugged, etc?

The more info you divulge, the more we can try to help.

Let us know, and stick around awhile, we can be a fun group.

BTW: your choice of Ovations (even if for the soundholes) is a good one.

Jim

My price range isn't terribly specific, but somehwere in the moderate range - up to $800ish.
I play more unplugged, but as I gain momentum as a musician, I'm playing more officially plugged in, but as I know that the 1778T and 2778LX both play well plugged in (and can adjust the EQ), I'm not too concerned about that.

I'm just wondering if the 2778LX's sound is as rich as the 1778T's. Even comparing the 1778T's sound to some top-of-the-line Takamine's, I prefer the 1778T, because it is so rich and full. Even if the 2778LX sounds great (which I'm sure it does), I'm just wondering if the low end sounds as full, because that's what drew me to the 1778T.

I guess what I mean is that if the 2778LX is overall just as rich, but the low end is less so, I'd rather spend less and get the 1778T.
But if the 2778LX has just as rich a low end, and a better high end on top of that, then I'd be okay with spending the money on the 2278LX.
But as no real stores carry the 2778LX, I need to be sure that it's a phenomenal guiitar to buy it without ever having played it, whereas I know the 1778T is great.

Thanks.

Edit: But I imagine that the 2778LX would have a richer sound because it's a deep contour.

You are very lucky! I was just in there on Monday and played both of those O's. I almost grabbed up the T, especially at the new lowered price. I really like the the contour bowl, and I think the 2078T, with the contour bowl would be an excellent choice for you, if you like the T and contour bowls.

Welcome! I hope you are aware of Alpep's recent threads about the lowered prices on these guitars.

If I were you, I'd PM Alpep for his price and make sure you don't pay too mush somewhere else. Production of the T is moving to Korea, and existing US guitars are selling now at Korean prices.

I think the unplugged sound is great. If you think the bass is too much, maybe experiment with different strings.

Easily solved. Get a set of Ovation Airlocks, they will allow you to tame the low end by plugging some of the soundholes. Creating a smaller soundhole area raises the fundamental frequency of the air cavity, and kills some of the bass-response.

Also remember that what you're hearing is different from what anyone in front of you is hearing. You're going to get the non-directional bass frequencies but not so much of the higher frequencies. I've thought before that one of mine was to bassy, but was told by listeners it was nicely balanced.

Okay, so now I'm definitely leaning towards a 2078T.

That, being said, one glance at this and I was sold:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EliteCK/

So, question. Is that 2078T with a Koa Epaulet exactly the same as a 2078T, with just the Koa? And would that inhibit the sound at all?
I like the look with the Koa a lot more than without.

And one more question: Does the Contour back help the rich sound, or does it hurt it?
I would imagine it helps, but I don't want my assumption to be wrong.

The T is normally sans-epaulet, just nekkid holes. I would buy some of that vinyl drawer lining paper, the stuff that sort of semi-sticks. You can cut out whatever kinds of epaulets you want and stick them right on. To answer your question, the T is a great sounding guitar and I doubt any sort of epaulet trim will diminish it. Dave

Thanks, Dave.

I'm definitely going to get the 2078T with the Koa Epaulet now.
Thanks everyone.

You'll be getting a great guitar. Congrats. You can always get one of those pearloid epaulets they use on the Melissa guitar and put it on -- if you like the surfcaster look ...
