Since I am thinking about buying a 12 string ovation I would like your opinions. Should I prefer a multihole model because the top is stronger in comparison to center hole models? In the internet I found some complaints about the bridge pulled off / stress on the top related to 12 string ovations...
Regards.

It's the first time I hear of this theory. The tension of a 12-string guitar is considerably higher but it is independent of the hole configuration. Therefore bridge problems are not related to this.

The bracing of multihole guitars is different and thus there is another type of strain on the wood top. But I'm not sure they stand the test of time better than centerhole models as a result of the bracing type.

Buy a 12-string Adamas guitar and you will NEVER get any problems. Never heared of any Adamas guitar in need of a neck reset due to a bulge in top.

Thanks for your answer, Karl...
just wish Adamas guitars would be a wee little bit cheaper... :)
By the way: You have got a very impressive collection!

Chris, remember one thing.

Your initial expense is the cheapest in the long run and there is nothing worse than spending too little on a guitar.

The price of disappointment is always higher.

What is your budget?

Chris, the fan bracing pattern of the Elite tops was done to facilitate an unimpeded flow of the top's vibration which added greatly to the overall sound and tone of the guitar...by placing the sound holes in the upper bout's of the tops it allowed those braces to be run over the length of the top w/o being stopped by a center cut sound hole...this technology was cutting edge and resulted in some of the finest sounding guitars ever made: Adamas (graphite/birch/graphite tops), and Elite (spruce tops)...you cannot go wrong with either...the Elite 12 strings are among the finest sounding and playing 12's ever made...

I would guess that any rigidity/strength is a by product and was not a primary concern in the initial R&D...

Thanks a lot MusicMishka,

this would mean that the 2058 TX-5 Elite Texture 12-String as an Elite model offers the same high quality sound and structural strenght I guess?

Best regards,

Chris.

Graphite is stronger than Wood; but an Elite is still a great idea that will serve you well...

Walter Carter cites Charlie Kaman as saying the center hole was structurally in the worst possible place and called it a "stress raiser", necessitating extra bracing in conventional guitars.

Don't prefer one over the other because of top strength, because each design deals with the forces in its own way. There are thousands of center-hole guitars doing just fine for every multi-hole guitar doing equally fine in their own way. Prefer one over the other because it sounds, looks, plays, or feels better to you than the alternative, or enjoy them both for their differences.

And on the subject of string pull (tension on the bridge), that's a factor of scale length, string gauge, and tuning. Both center hole and multi-hole tops will have the same bridge tension if those three factors are identical, but each design will distribute the forces across the rest of the guitar differently according to the guitar's construction and the materials used.

Has anyone heard the story of "Five Canoe Larry"?

Chris, talk to Mr. Big, aka Alpep and tell him what your budget is. He will take good care of you.
