For anyone in the know. In looking through some catalogs, I noticed that Ovation was saying that Custom Elites and Legends have "deluxe grade ebony" while they just say "ebony" for the elites and legends (fretboard and bridge). Just marketing or is there a difference? Also, does anyone know if Ovation paints their ebony for a uniform blackness? Thanks in advance.

Tough call. Ovation uses "deluxe grade ebony", but the gibson songbird uses "the highest grade ebony on earth". What's a poor buyer supposed to do?

These days, if it's uniformly black, on an affordable guitar, it's dyed.

Paul, I'm not sure what you mean by "affordable" in context. The Elite and Legend when I last looked had MSRPs of something on the order of $2200, and were regularly selling on the web for $1700 or so (although prices now seem to be dropping). I guess that's affordable compared to an Adamas or Collings or Goodall or what have you, and not as affordable as PacRim imports. So. . . does anyone know what Ovation has done on their U.S.-made guitars with ebony over the last few years?
