No expert here, but that sure looks like walnut to me. Other than it being a peghead, the wood looks like my 1680.

Mitz,

That is Resin impregnated Walnut. Basically take a block of Walnut, stick it in a pressure chamber, heat it up and infuse it with a Resin.

It was the high Tech way to make stronger, weather resistant copter blades and parts until they learned how to weave carbon fibres!

Go figure!

They don't resin impregnate the necks do they? Only the fretboards I thought. The walnut neck on my Ding-O seems to be simply satin finished walnut. That said, when talking wood with someone named Woody who is famous for his knowledge and uses of wood, I defer.

Of course, the dude with the big smile and big wood on that enzyte ad is named Bob. :)

Well I thought that if I bravely went first I'd either totally right or quickly corrected.

Dave - I know the Fretboards are soaked but the necks have definitely got something running through them - is it simply the Tru-Oil?

Adamas walnut necks are not just bare wood. They are treated with something like (I think) tru-oil.

Dave,

How/when is it applied? Prior to or after shaping? Hand, pressure, soaked?

This is something I haven't heard of before. Ya have any links for the process?

Tru-oil was originally designed for gun stocks. And walnut is a good wood for gun stocks.

I've used Tru-oil on many of my C&R firearms. But what is puzzling me is Woody's
the necks have definitely got something running through them
.

Here's 12 coats of Tru-Oil:

I believe the factory uses "urethane oil" on their hand rubbed necks.

it seems i've heard the term, "resin-impregnated walnut necks" several times around here. guess some folks meant fretboards but called 'em necks.

Interesting discussion. According to John B they use Danish rubbed oil on the 2077LX which is probably the same on the adamas?

Resin impegregnated wood has been around for a long time. I own a wood pattern shop. We have used it for the 25 years I have been here. The resin (usually an expoxy type glue) is used to pressure laminate the wood; not only glueing the surface, but the resin via the pressure is squeezed into the wood itself creating a very strong bond and offering great stability.

I made a traditional recurve bow (one of my other hobbies). I glued up the stock for the bow with a slow cure epoxy and then cured it at something like 200 degrees (if I rememeber right) Cureing at a higher temperature allows the epoxy resin to withstand heat to a much higher degree. I would hazard to guess that they also do this with the guitar necks but I have never been to the factory to see. Maybe someone who has been there can enlighten us?

The greater the number of laminations the greater the stability of the wood. That is always the trade off as it tends to look less like wood with more laminations. I think if you look very closely at a neck that appears to be one solid piece you may see the laminations. If done carefully and laminations are large it may be very difficult to see them.

Here is a photo my bow riser. Bubinga, black fiberglass, hard maple, black fiberglass, and Bubinga again. Same process as a guitar neck I suppose.

Thanks guys. I can't tell you how long it took me to sand the file marks out of that bubinga. That stuff is absolutly a bear to work with. Hard as a rock.

I really want to make a guitar someday. I am torn between getting a kit type of thing or making my own design. The guy I bought my first recurve from made guitars as well and the last time I talked to him he still had some rosewood that he got from Martin somehow...boy would I like to have that to start with
