Joined: May 2009 Posts: 70 Location: Battle Creek, MI | I have another project guitar and I want to swap out the op24+ for the optima because it has a tuner. Does anyone know if this can be done without modifications to the guitar. I am working on a S771 ovation balladeer

As far as the electronics, I'm not sure. I haven't had reason to pull my Optima, but I would imagine by that time the were using the 1/8" jacks for the pickup connection. Someone else here probably could tell you for sure.

Also, if your battery box is mounted with a screw fastener inside the bowl you may want to cut a hole for the external-access battery box that the Optima comes with. John <>{

I had to open up some holes in the bowl mounting bracket and source some slightly longer bolts to attach the pre to the bracket. Also the Optima uses a centre -ve plug for the battery connection while the older preamps have the battery terminals hard-wired, so you need to get hold of a suitable plug. None of this is a huge problem, but it's a PITA if you're expecting just to swap'em out. If you don't need the XLR facilty just bolt the entire assembly in place using the 1/4 jack, leaving the XLR output inside the bowl. I did that because I needed the 12 string up and running in a hurry, so I know it works. I'll get around to cutting the extra hole somtime, or maybe never.

Sounds like it all should work with a little patience and a few parts. Now I have to find an optima preamp.....so far that has been a bit of a struggle

They swap does involve cutting and its not easy. You have to locate the hole exactly for the can to fit properly. I have seen instructions in here on how to do it. If it were me, it would be on its way to the mother ship for that work. Otherwise, leave it just use a hand held tuner.

Also, does that preamp have the battery inside the guitar, or is the battery accessable from the outside. Thanks again

Does anyone know the best way to drill a hole in the back of the ovation for the XLR jack? I mean...I am pretty sure any drill will work...but looking for someone with some experience in such....
