Stainless steel frets are quite the rage over at the Carvin forum. However, I've read good and bad things about them.

Good: much harder than nickel-silver, last much longer, smoother string bends (not that I do a whole lot of that).

Bad: much harder than nickel-silver, more expensive to fix/replace, their hardness makes filing them difficult, makes guitar sound way too "bright".

I would think if they were that great, more guitars would have them. Has anyone here had any experience with them?

Some people that I know have gits. equipped with stainless frets , I would like Jumbo stainless ,... with several gits. that need fret replacement it makes sense to me , ... I did n`t notice any noticeable difference in sound , not even on acoustic , what I did notice is that strings slide easy over those , hence , the easy-bending , but .. not being used to them , strings tended to slip away from underneath my fingers , but even so I still want them , I guess , I `ll get used to `em.

SS is an awesome metal! Of course it's more expensive than brass, bronze and their near competitors due to the costly metallurgic process.

Living in the salty galvanic atmosphere that I do and having professionally dealt with commercial acidic and caustic processes in the past, SS is the way to go!

In fact, I'm surprised that the top dollar gits normally don't offer SS frets. Maybe there is a down side besides the cost and 'workability' that escapes me...

Ummmm, maybe it's the weight, like with tuner buttons... Naaaw...

All the CA guitars have SS frets. I personally never noticed the difference.

On my two teles I've put on Warmoth necks with ss frets. I find no difference in sound, but in terms of feel, bends are better. Plus they last longer.

Oh yeah, and in terms of doing the set up fret job my luthier had no problems. I never had to replace, but in terms of set up, I don't know what those people are talking about.

I'd say they make great sense for electrics.

Have there been any experiments with titanium?

I've experimented several times with titanium and I can't find a driver that hits straight. Without question an inherently faulty metal.

Thanks, Weaz. Not only did you not answer my question, you had to remind me that I haven't played golf in a year and a half. I bought the latest Callaway driver just before my back injury. Damn.
