Location: NorthEast Georgia | I have received a model 1861 Balladeer with serial number 348859 and would like help finding information about it. There is conflicting infromation about the year of manufacture from some site based on the serial. This site has it as an 1985-86, but another list the range as 1994-99? Mine has the FET-3 preamp and the blue and white oval paper label with seperate serial label. I would really like any information and assistance you might be able to provide. The Ovation service center has been less than helpful and will only refer me to their website. Thanks. |

I will try to be helpful. I have an 1860 with a 459xxx serial number and it was made in 1993 (I think). Because yours has the FET3 as does mine, I would go for the older date. In later years they put in OP-24+, then the OP-30.
When you say it has a 'White Oval Paper' label, does it have a picture of the factory in the background? That would indicate a newer date.
And Photos always help! (plus we Like Pictures! ) |

Location: NorthEast Georgia | Will try pix soon. The label has a picture of an gutiar behind the Ovation name and says made in the USA under the words "A Kaman music product". Label is oval blue and white with black text. Any ideas where I might get manual on the FET3? |

Does it have black nylon-cased tuners with chrome buttons? |

Location: London, UK | My serial no. begins 303... so is older. You probably have chrome tuners.
Not sure there ever was a manual on the FET-3. It does what it says on the label. It contains 3 field-effect transistors. It has a volume knob and active sliders for bass/mid/treble with centre detents. It has a button that puts a green LED on when the battery is healthy. And it also puts the green LED on when the battery is unhealthy, making it completely irrelevant.
I found DR Rare strings bring a good bass response out of the shallow body and would recommend you give then a try. |
