Powerpopper!
First this.....and now I see you have jumped into the deep water and got a German Topped D2h!!!

You are living the good life......look forward to your impressions.

OFC MEMBERS.....these are the last of the best! Al got all the last ones and I can't imagine that there are a lot of them left. Break open the piggy banks and get one while they are still available!

having one of each (blue/red) is pretty damn sweet.
Been out of town but my business neighbor across the hall signed for it so I will pick it up on Monday.

These guitars are so worth more money than the asking price....even in todays tough economic times, getting one is a no brainer.

Willa....you should grab a blue one while you patiently search for that elusive red one you want. You won't regret it.

So Stephen, should I sell my OFC slothead to buy one of these?

I guess that's up to you Paul.

I personally didn't care for the OFC 1 guitar that I heard (too dark sounding) and chose the 47RI over it.

I think for the price Al is asking, this last batch of 1687's are hard to beat.....plus the sentimental fool in me wants to own a piece of the "end of an era".

All different flavors of ice cream. Can't go wrong with any of them and I have sold more than a few to purchase few more! ;)

I agree with T28, the allure of being part of the Adamas swansong was too much to pass by. I've already been offered more for the red one than I paid.

Maybe I should become a Maton or Cole Clark enthusiast.

Having just joined the fortunate few who have both a blue and red one (OFC and #47), I can do a quick A/B. I was disappointed in the OFC when I brought the 47 home. Then I changed the strings on the OFC. The difference is slight. The 47 is slightly crisper or brighter. I don't know how to discribe it. It's there, but so small, it's hard to describe.

Same conclusion as Mark. It's the saddle on the OFC guitar that does it. Since I never play it plugged in I'm thinking of getting a solid bone replacement.

The 1687 regular reissues are damn good for the money but not quite in the same league as the 47/OFC. Of course good old #42 and it's siblings define yet another league entirely.

Karl, in Germany, reached the same conclusion. There are a couple additional factors that might affect the sound. One is that on mine the action is about one shim higher on the 47. I don't know if I'll bother taking a shim out to check the difference. I might put one back in the OFC. The other is whatever difference occurs from putting the electronics in. That shrinks the bowl volume by some small factor.

A bone saddle and a sharper break over the saddle can mean a real difference in sound. I'm not surprised that there's a difference.

On my rebuilt Legend I've got a real good break over the saddle (acoustic only, bone saddle) and with mediums on it it has a real good pop. On my 87C, there's a lesser break and it takes lights to make it ring (mediums on it sound dull)...

Ay caramba! This thread is is getting frighteningly close to a transcript of doily knitters sitting around the stove. ;) The difference may actually be from the way you're holding your pick ... you are using the same exact pick for the sound comparisons, right?

Maybe I'm just jealous 'cause I really can't appreciate the minute nuances. Or perhaps I'm just happy to have the guitars I have. Even if it would be cool to have one if these, I can't see buying another guitar to be able to put one more shim in it to get a slightly different tone. I'd never freaking hear the difference ... not with my lame playing anyway.

Stephen, I was just teasing about selling the OFC I slothead (ding!). I'm not a huge Adamas fan (except for my Adamas I 12) and if I got one of the last Adamas I's from Al, it wouldn't get played as much as my Legend, 87C or FD14. If you got the cash, it's a cool purchase, but not something I've gotta have.

I'm very sentimental about the OFC slothead (ding!) and the sound of it is only one component....

And speaking of picks, a nylon pick will sound totally different than a plastic pick. My 1617 Legend sounds a LOT better with a nylon pick, but the 2077 LX sounds better with plastic. (I hardly ever even use a pick, but I like to try both plastic and nylon whenever I get a new guitar, just in case I feel like playing "Under the Double Eagle".)

Same pick, same thumbnail, same angle of attack, but the most noticeable difference to me is one is blue and the other is red. Also, the blue one has knobs on the side that I never use.

I now tonerite all of my guitars (all wood and/or all space age materials)which makes a significant improvement in both sound and feel.

Mark, I slapped the tonerite on the #47 for about 2 days before you got it. Normally a 4-7 day session really makes them shine but even 2 days probably added a little sparkle.
