Hi, fellow Ovation fans. New guy here in need of help selecting strings for my new 1717 Legend. It currently has D'Addario EXP16s on it. I don't like their sound or how they hurt my fretting hand.

Oh, about my fretting hand. I irreparably damaged it awhile back. It still works for playing, but it tires easily with the wrong strings. The Martin lights on my 000-16SGT are very easy on my hand. I can play it for hours. Can you recommend some strings for my 1717 that'll be easy on my hand and still sound good? BTW, if it's any help, I'm a folkie, fingerstyle, strumming type guy (with his first Ovation!). Thank you for any help you can give me.

Get a set of XtraLights (and a good amp).

I(personally) can't see going with anything lighter than lights on an Ovation. I think they tend t'sound "thin". Then again, y'might WANT that "shimmery-strummy" sound . . .

OfCourse, . . y'could just string it up "Nahville" . . .

Welcome Capo2ndFret,
If you want advice this is the place to come to.
Everyone agrees,Ovations are quality Guitars that don't get the respect they deserve. Now, just about anything other advise given will vary greatly.
Strings like guitars are pesonal preference. I myself tried 8-10 different "brands" before I fell in love with Elixir Nanoweb lights. 20 other members here will say I'm nuts, Elixirs "suck"! Again, personal preference.
If the problem you have is with "sensitivity" to you finger tip. try coated string. The D'Adarrio's 16's are ,I believe Mediums. Go to a light or as Cliff suggested Xtra light set.

Elixirs suck.....sorry Bob I could not resist. Anyways Capo, maybe it is not the strings, maybe your new guitar needs to be set up properly or maybe your Martin has a smaller neck profile. If you like Martin lights, try them, keep trying different ones until you find the ones that sound good and play good on your Ovation. I use lights on all of my guitars, but different brands (including Elixirs) on different guitars. It's all personal preference.

Great advice! I've got an appointment this week to get the setup done. It sounds like "lights" will work for me. Thanks for the help, guys. Very much appreciated.

Try Adamas 1818 it will sound good.
If your habds hurting too many shims could be the issue. They come with 3, I normally take 2 out.
