First time poster! Getting back into playing acoustic after many years off, in church mostly & thru PA exclusively. I have this old shiny backed Balladeer (in great shape!) which I purchased new, and I want to add a pick-up and external pre/eq/DI box. At first glance, liking the Baggs M1 passive(expensive?) and the LB6(reasonable). Which one would be "best" for an old deep bowl standard Balladeer? As for PADI's, the Baggs PADI is on the expensive side for me, especially if I go the M1 route. Does the cheaper Ultrasound DI Plus work well with these high impedance pickups? Any others that I should consider? I'm open to any sugestions for pups or external boxes. TIA for any assistance!

I'm not certain that I'd mess with a 67 Balladeer. You might be better off looking on the 'bay and getting (for not much more money than you're looking at for the converstion), an older a/e Balladeer or Legend.

And welcome to the board.....

Welcome! I have to agree wholeheartedly with Moody on this one. That's a special guitar you have, and if it were mine I wouldn't modify it. Really good A/E Ovations have been going cheap lately, and one of those would serve you much better for church.

Where in N FL are you?

Welcome to the club 49r!

I don't know much about the pick-ups/pre-amps you're describing but I hate the thought of a shiny bowl "modified" in that way.

How's about selling me the balladeer and getting a newer acoustic/electric ovation with the pre-amp already installed?

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I'm leaning towards going over to ebay and Craigslist/Jacksonville to see what's available. I had no idea that recently used Ovations were such a reasonable commodity. For the record, mine is one of the "Patent Applied For" guitars made in Nov of 1967. I bought it at the old Bucks County Folk Music Shop (Carl Dietrich) in eastern PA back in the summer of '68. I remember that it had been sitting in Carl's shop for over six months and he gave me a good deal on it, like $285 or something close to that. No body liked the sound! Little did they know... ~Pete

Welcome 49r. I own a DB shiny bowl made in feb 67. I just got it back restored to its original beauty from the factory. What a super nice guitar !!
I vote for ebay as said by Moody and G8r.

PS : have any pics of your DB to share ?

If price is the issue go with the Baggs M1. The passive version will work fine into just about any input without a preamp and doesn't need a tech to install it. So you'll save money on both the cost of installation and a preamp. You can use the trailing cord that comes with the pickup, so you don't even need to drill a hole for an output jack

Hey, 49r! First I have to apologize: this is off-topic, but I was intrigued by your monicker here. My last name is Miner, and I went through my early life being called "Miner 49er," because of the song. Are you a Miner too?

All: This is only a brief digression. This is NOT an attempt to hijack this thread. If this had been a real attaempt to hijack this thread, you would have been notified by a tone from your radio...

Digression accepted. I'm a Mining Engineer.

As for the passive M1, has anyone actually plugged straight from the pup to an amp or DI box using the included 12' Mogami cord? If I get the M1, I plan on doing it this way, even though it will look sloppy with the cord coming out of the sound hole. But I don't want to drill out the end pin or drill a hole in the bowl for the jack. Should not damage the top in any way as long as I'm careful with the pup install. Thanks for y'alls advice. It's much appreciated! ~Pete

My main acoustic slide guitar used to be an early 70's Legend with a Baggs M1 Passive. I toured for years with that guitar. It'll work into any standard input on an amp or DI box. Don't be misled by the term passive. In this case it is merely to differentiate from the active version which has an inbuilt preamp. There are no impedance issues with the M1 passive.
