Joined: April 2007 Posts: 41 | Hey guys, the rubber piece near the saddle above the shims where the strings rest on has for some reason been wearing away on my guitar. this causes buzzing on my low E string. Of course i can just add a shim, which is most definitely my temporary solution, but does anyone know why this happens? it only happened to my E string. I would imagine that these rubber things would just slowly wear away, as i've never heard of it happening to other people. Also is there anywhere i can cheaply just purchase a new "rubber thing"? and what is the name of the rubber thign?

If your guitar is acoustic only, that's not too expensive, but if it is an acoustic/electric then the saddle contains the pickup as well. You could get the factory to send a new one, or someone may chip in with detail of where you could get a non-original version. No idea why it's happening, I've had four ovations and put a lot of hours into them, with no noticeable affect on the saddle.

If it looks like the one on the left (with no wire) just go get another one. If you have a local guitar shop, just take the original down there and tell them you need another one just like it that ain't worn-out. [Last time I did that at Apple Music they let me dig through a box of them to match the size, then sold me 3 for $5] If you don't have a local shop, I believe that you can get a compensated Tusq saddle for $8 - $10 online. Just do some real thorough measuring before you order. Just cuz the evilBay listing sez that it is a 'Tusq saddle for Ovation' doesn't mean that it will fit your Ovation. Then you can flat sand it down from the bottom to your desired height. If your saddle has a wire, that is more problematic. But you can still just replace it. Contact the MotherShip, or replace it with a separate saddle and an UnderSaddle Transducer. If your Little Rubber Thing doesn't look like either of these... Please disregard this post. :p

The following pictures are from a saddle from a 12-string. By the looks of the grooves, it would seem that this saddle needed to be replaced! in the second picture, whats the bottom pickup(it doesn't quit resemble the top one)? when I made a saddle to replace this plastic one, I made it flat on the bottom(no legs) and added the semi-circular pocket(with a dremel) the length of the saddle to accomodate the wire that connects the piezo elements(that are topped with silicon that the saddle sits on). less than 1/16" of the saddle actually sits on the 1/4" wide piezo element.
