I have an Elite 1868-X but I can't find a serial number on it. The tag inside the guitar reads 1868-X 4/6. It is also signed but it is hard to make out the name. The signature starts with a C--K---and ends with II? Does the -X mean anything and is the 4/6 the serial number? I have a picture of the guitar on my website, www.Foreversouthern.com.

Welcome Mike...
That signature is C W Kaman II...

I know absolutely nothing about the serial number, unless the 4/6 means that it is #4 outta 6 made?
Smarter people may be able to give better info...

Welcome, Mike! That's a unique and pretty guitar you have there. The -X isn't a usual model designation - that and the fact the label itself says "Custom" means it's probably a limited run (#4 of 6 made would probably be correct). The epaulets are different from other Elites/Adamas I've seen, so maybe they were experimenting with that. A natural top is designated as a -4, but yours looks like it has bear claw figure, so that might be part of it, too. CWKII himself sometimes shows up here, so maybe he can give more info.

BTW, a neighbor of yours in Simpsonville, Beggin' Jim, is co-hosting a get-together of Ovation Fan Club members in about a month. You should seriously consider attending - great fun, even greater people, and a chance to see and play Ovation and Adamas guitars you might never otherwise see.

I think ya'll are right, it probably means 4 out of 6.
Too bad about the signature, that makes it pretty much worthless.

I haven't tried to play in many years and inherited the guitar recently after my Dad passed. He was always so proud of it. Thanks for your advice.

Beal are you being facetious regarding the signature or is truly the guitar worthless? I was wondering if I should insure it?

Don't listen to Beal. He really doesn't know what he's talking about. We just tolerate him here when the hospital lets him near a computer....

Used Ovations don't sell for what they really should. Great news for buyers, bad news for sellers. If you are interested in playing it, just keep it and enjoy. It's a great looking guitar.

Your homeowner's insurance likely covers it, or if it is stolen from your locked car it would be covered by auto insurance. Minus deductibles. If your collection exceeds your homeowner's limits you can get a separate policy for about $200 per year to cover about $15k or so of instruments.

since it was your father's you have to keep it and learn to play

Home owners should cover it. extra policies run $.55/$1000 value insured. for just one instrument it's not worth it. the guitar is probably in the $500-1000 range.

That sound right guys?? been a long time since I bought an Ovation.

Mike H,

Welcome to the Ovation Hive Mind!

Don't let Beal fool ya. He is the CWKII, aka the son of the Kamam Empire/Ovation founder. Around here, he's also the 'GAS station attendant'.

BTW, any #4 of 6 Ovation/Adamas is a keeper!

I have no intentions of selling it! He thought so much of it and when he could, before a stroke, really pick it.

Interesting Epaulets, look more like actual Maple and Oak Leaf(s).

Welcome!

1992... Gives you an idea when the 1868-X was made.

I think that He bought (or traded for) the guitar in Gaffney, SC from Haynes Music Co back in the 90's. I think it was new when he got it. He thought that the back was different somehow.

Thanks OMA. That dates it pretty good. I remember Haynes music, used to be a good store.

I had one of those a few years ago, and was told that it was one of a limited run of guitars made for certain retail dealers.

I remember that in the late 90's Haynes Music Co. sponsored an event to break the Guinness World Record for the number of guitars being played at one time in one place (I think that was the objective) and the best I can remember they broke the record.
