Joined: September 2005 Posts: 3619 Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Well I finally began the preamp change-over this weekend on my Adamas II from the Op-24 to the OP Pro Studio.(I'm trying to remember to take pictures throughout the project to post later) I made the template with modeling clay for both the Pre-amp and the Jack plug-ins, both worked fine. I already made the cuts with my Dremmel tool after using a fiberglass patch kit to add some more material to the bowl where needed. Everything fits nice and aside from needed paint, I believe it will be a total success. I thought it interesting that beneath the factory paint was the old gold-fleck bowl color.(which I wish they would have left on there) Now .... I have to figure out how to get paint to match the existing bowl color.(kinda' brown) Any suggestions? (I do have an airbrush) I guess I could try to coax the guys at the MS into sending me a small amount of "touch-up paint" or turn me on to a source. Any other ideas?

When I was employed, the woman at the paint desk matched colors for me perfectly! The other customers would look at me like I was weird cuz I would show-up with a Door off of an electrical box or a piece of a stove, but she would match it perfectly... Even to the aged color. So maybe if you take a piece of the bowl down to them. (Or the whole guitar!) Are you gonna repaint the whole bowl, or just touch-up? And I would ask there sage advice on the kind of paint, informing them of how much wear-n-tear would be expected.

The whole guitar is impractical, because to accurately match the paint they need to clamp a sample to their color sampler. I didn't think about it before, but the access cover should work great for them to sample off of. An oil-based enamel would robably be best, but I think I'll ask the factory. Sherman Williams may have more choices on paint types.

I actually ordered the color in flat AND semigloss. I am going to apply the flat first, then I'll use a stiff artist brush and apply the semi-gloss using a stipple effect(running my nail back accross the paint-filled bristles)to match the texture on the rest of the bowl.

I'm trying to do that right now, even though it's difficult to hold two things and take a picture at the same time, while at the same time having my three grandkids running around at my feet (: I actually did the painting last night. I hadn't used my airbrush for quite some time and it was very uncooperative. It took me two hours to get things working. Despite all that, I think it is going to come out quite nice in the end. I definitely would not recommend this for the faint of heart! I now have an even higher respect for those professionals who do this stuff at the factory! GWB ... I got the color matched at home depot. They did a color match off the access cover as both a flat and a semi-gloss. I eneded up spraying on the flat, then once it began to dry, I took a stiff toothbrush and used it to spatter the semi-gloss on. Even though I didn't have as much control over the environment as I would have liked, it looked pretty good last night. The color matched perfectly, and the texture ... well we'll see today.
