Ok, this is probably a stupid question but....
I've recently started to play a little jazz and am thinking of getting a decent archtop just as soon as I can find one. In the meantime, while I was whining about string noise when playing jazz on my USA Elite (which I hardly play), a friend suggested that I shove some D'Addario Chromes on it and quit whining! He said that this would give me a reasonable jazz tone at least until I found that archtop. I dismissed that idea, but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if if it could be done!

Has anyone tried it?

You could be the first. Give it a shot.

I tried some 0.13 Chromes on my Adamas a while ago. The basses sound a bit dull, lack those nice high harmonics. Then I changed back to regular bronze strings, and think I will not try that again.
I use Chromes regularly on my Cort (Gibson 335 clone) and like the results.
The main difference is that you have no noise when you change the position of your hand on the neck.

LOL. It's those high harmonics that seem to terrify Jazz guitarists so I guess it may be worth a shot, at least until I can choose between an Eastman, Peerless or one of those damn fine Taylor T5's.

Now if I could just decide between them....

Try Elixir Nano strings. The coating is slippery and it really kills the finger noise. On my '07C the Nano Phosphor Bronze sound as nice as any brand of non-coated. They are bright, not jazzy mellow, so it still sounds like an acoustic guitar but without the finger squeeks.

For a more mellow tone, you could try Silk 'n Steel strings. Or, you could get an '06 Collector's edition which is Koa and mellow sounding, then install Nano or Silk 'n Steel strings.

I put Thomastik JS112 flatwound strings on my Tornado. It is definitely a mellower "jazzier" sound and absolutely no finger squeaks. The only downside is that they are a little pricey.

I use Chromes on my Surfcaster and sometimes my Danelectro and Strat. IMHO, they'd probably suck on an Elite.

What you want are D'Addario EFT16 (12's) or EFT17 (13's). They call them "Flat Tops", but they are phosphor bronze acoustic strings ground down semi-flat. Good for both (relatively) squeakless playing and also slide work.

Try www.juststrings.com. That's where I got mine.

P.S. You came to the right place to ask a dumbass question ... there are a lot of us dumbasses who hang out here. Stick around and you'll see.

While smooth and no noise or squeak when changing fretting or chords, I've found them to be mediocre and very dull sounding at best... no life or brightness at all to them.

I've used them on my solidbody guitar and a 335 copy I am borrowing from a friend, they sound just plain dull.

I don't think I'll be using them again, and definitely wouldn't consider them on an A/E O.

Chromes are designed for inductive, not piezo, 'tronics.

I've never used chromes on an Ovation and I didn't like them on my Jazz Box.
I used the Elixer Brand for electric guitar and was much happier.

We have some good jazz players on this Board. Can't remember his name, but he recommended the Be-Bop jazz strings when I was looking for jazz strings a while back. I bought a few sets and they're really great, but you'll be happier using them on an archtop. I also prefer single coils on an archtop.
