Had an opportunity to back up a singer/songwriter a few weeks ago who played a beautiful Collings. He basically played rhythm and asked if I could back him up as well as provide some arpeggio picking between his lines. The songs were all his own compositions published over the past 20 years, none of which I had ever heard, and I expressed some reluctance to butcher them by adding my own interpretation on the fly. He was insistent, so I charged ahead using the EA68 Viper. As we started playing, I was thinking that I probably should have selected a guitar with a bowl or the EF75, but it turned out well. When finished, he came over and had a bunch of questions about the Viper. He wasn’t familiar with the model and still isn’t exactly sure what it is, but was very complimentary of its tone, particularly how well it fit in when I echoed what he was doing on his Collings, yet cut through when I went into some melodic lead. He was feeding directly into the house from his built-in preamp while I was going through my regular acoustic pedals, primarily a few custom presets on the Zoom A2.1u and the Trace SMX (bass comp only). Feels good when others take note of our beloved brand.
